Description
August 15, 1998
To my tremendous astonishment, I have been invited to the LA County Nature Preserve in order to meet with "Joe Junior", a massive gorilla from Uganda roughly as large as the legendary "Joseph Young, of Africa" who appeared as the star act of the Golden Safari nightclub for a few months in 1949. Joe Jr., like his namesake, is close friends with a woman named Jill Young, who happens to be the granddaughter of the Jill Young who brought the first Joe to Los Angeles. Jill's mother, Ruth Young, was the senior Jill's daughter. Sadly, Ruth Young was shot by poachers along with Joe's mother one awful night when Jill was eight years old, and Joe little more than an infant. In another surprising coincidence, Gregg O'Hara is the grandson of Max O'Hara, the millionaire who brought Joe to America to star in his nightclub. Thankfully, the nature preserve seems far more accommodating to Joe than the old Golden Safari nightclub, and Joe Jr. seems poised to become the star attraction of the place.
Joe's immense size has been proven to be caused by a rare recessive gene, which only crops up in the gorillas of the area around Mount Pangani every few generations. It's believed that the local legend of N'Gai Zamu, the giant guardian of the mountain, may have been caused by encounters with previous Joe-sized gorillas. Since Joe Sr. was taken from Mt. Pangani as an infant, nobody ever made the connection with the legend before.

History seems to be repeating itself. Joe Young Jr. went on a rampage last night at a fund-raising dinner, injuring and terrifying several very wealthy members of Los Angeles's elite. Joe was ultimately brought down by tranq darts, but the damage has been done. Joe is awaiting execution via lethal injection in a concrete bunker.

History has indeed repeated itself, but with something of a twist. Jill and Joe apparently attempted to flee to the Strasser Nature Conservancy in Botswana. However, Strasser himself has been outed as a former poacher who made enough money to start up the conservancy, which served only as a means of obtaining animal organs to sell on the black market. What's more, Strasser was the poacher who killed Ruth Young and Joe's mother several years before. The entire sordid story was relayed by Strasser's former associate Garth Sands, who is looking at a reduced sentence thanks to pleading guilty. Strasser also attempted to kill Jill when she recognized him. Apparently, the infant Joe bit off Strasser's thumb and trigger finger after he killed Ruth, leaving him with a distinctive two-fingered glove. When she fled, Joe smashed his way out of Strasser's truck and tried to follow her, ambling around Los Angeles for some time before arriving at the Santa Monica Pier. Jill, Gregg, Garth, and Strasser arrived at the amusement park to hunt Joe down. When Strasser attempted to shoot Jill, Garth (who had no reservations about harming animals, but drew a hard, solid line at shooting people) knocked his gun away. The shot hit a spotlight, and started a fire. Strasser followed Jill, and tried to kill her again, but Joe threw him into a power transformer, electrocuting him. The fire spread through a significant part of the amusement park, including a stuck Ferris wheel with a small boy on the top named Jason Feldman. Joe rescued Jason from atop the wheel, but was nearly killed when the wheel tipped over from the heat of the fire and Joe's own weight. While Joe was knocked out for several minutes by the impact, Jason landed atop Joe and was unharmed.
A massive inpouring of donation money, thanks to a TV news crew's capturing the entire thing, has allowed Jill to open the "Joe Young Preserve" in Uganda, where Joe will live for the foreseeable future."
Reality check: this is the title character from the 1998 remake of "Mighty Joe Young". I do not own the rights, etc etc...

Thank you, I always thought it was well-made, and generally underrated, if a bit Disneyfied.
