Description
September 1, 1976
As the rediscovery of Skull Island has rocked the annals of MONARCH, a number of studies have been made regarding the newly-uncovered entrances to a number of enormous and unexplored caverns beneath the island. For some reason, I was given permission to access the top-secret files regarding the infamous "Iron Mole" incident.
In April of 1914, the brainchild of Professor Perry of the University of London was finally completed. The Iron Mole was an enormous machine designed to tunnel deep underground by means of a massive drill on its bow. (Captain Jinguji has gone on record claiming that the Iron Mole was the inspiration for the design of the Atragon). It went on its first test run on April 22 of 1914, carrying Professor Perry and his sponsor, David Innes. Unfortunately, they soon discovered that the Iron Mole's turning abilities were negligible. The heat and pressure of the journey swiftly overwhelmed them, and both men passed out. The Iron Mole roared far deeper underground than they had intended to take it, far beyond any hope of recovering them. After a week, Perry and Innes were both presumed lost along with the machine.
Two weeks later, the Iron Mole roared out of the White House lawn, with the two-man crew still very much alive within. After being debriefed by United States officials, Innes and Perry returned to England. The Iron Mole underwent a second test run, but neither Innes nor Perry ever came back from their second trip into the planet, and to this day, their ultimate fate is uncertain. Most of the Iron Mole's design schematics were taken with Professor Perry during the second voyage, and only a handful of the most basic plans remain.
Astoundingly, I have discovered that the Americans learned a great deal from Perry and Innes regarding their voyage into the planet's core, and what they found there. The information was deemed top-secret, and MONARCH kept it that way for over sixty years.
At the Earth's core, Perry and Innes tunneled into a gargantuan cavern inhabited by swarms of strange and ancient creatures. The entire cavern was illuminated by the glow of molten lava on the "ceiling" of the strange land, kept aloft by the strange properties of gravity in the cavern. The underground world was certainly warm - Innes compared it to a tropical jungle for heat and humidity - but the heat was far less formidable than modern science would suggest lies beneath the Earth at that depth. The air was breathable, the water was drinkable, and overall, the cavern seemed able to easily support human life - as it already did.
The underground world was inhabited by several small tribes of stone-age humans, who were kept from advancing by a mysterious and ancient power. They knew their homeland as "Pellucidar", and they had no knowledge of the world beyond their own. Innes and Perry found themselves in a fight for their lives against the higher powers of Pellucidar, supported by most of the primitive humans, but undermined at every turn by a malevolent and cunning man named Hooja the Sly One...
The first large creature encountered by Innes and Perry in the world of Pellucidar was a gargantuan bipedal reptilian with a massive parrot-like beak. The creature was known as a "Coracca" by the people of Pellucidar, though before encountering them, professor Perry simply gave it a name meaning "Perry's Parrot Monster" adding "It was the first thing that came to mind!" The creature trampled through the thick jungle, chasing David and the professor away from the Iron Mole. Perry escaped up a tree, but David found himself caught in quicksand. As the reptilian closed in to tear him apart, a barrage of spears flew at it from out of the jungle. Uninjured but aggravated, the monster turned to leave as David found himself being hauled out of the quicksand by a different threat...

Neato! They summarized it pretty well at the beginning, I thought!

A relative of the Gappa trio, perhaps? Or a DNA donor for Gamera?
Also, will you be covering the more recent Journey to the Center of the Earth movies?

Both explanations are... accurate. The explanation will come in a few weeks.
I'm honestly not sure about the more recent Journey to the Center of the Earth movies. They might have been critically panned (and deservedly so), but they do a surprisingly good job in recapturing the atmosphere of the classic b-movies of their caliber. I've got a few more movies that I'll be doing before getting to them, though.

Maybe the more recent ones are just in different regions of that same region?

At least you finally got to the Amicus productions/ Edgar Rice Burroughs trilogy. And if that was a real dinosaur, I think the closest to that is a Gigantoraptor.

That sounds about right, though I have plans to more fully explain the origins of the truly weird critters that will be populating Pellucidar.

This is awesome. Once again your world building skills are excellent, and the illustration is a wonderful representation of the monster. Great work.
