By the time Melody and her red colt queued up for their run, the arena had been torn apart by the hooves of the previous competitors. What was once a groomed lawn was now a muddy quagmire! Melody surveyed the conditions with a frown, concerned about what sort of traction issues they might encounter... the last thing she wanted was for Cal to slip and fall in the mud and wet grass.

She glanced down at her mount from her perch in his saddle, and noted warmly that Cal seemed eager. His ears were perked forward and his eyes seemed bright and excited. The boy had always loved puddles, so what difference was mud to him? She slipped a hand down onto his neck, which was already damp from the light snowfall that had begun to pepper the air, and gave him a pat. "I'm ready if you are," she whispered to him.

The had trained for literal years, and this was the last step before the big Futurity Championships! They couldn't back down now!

Melody took a deep breath and adjusted the collar the black vest she was wearing over her Futurity jacket - two layers against the cold to protect the desert-born rider. She ran her fingers through Cal's loose, fluffy mane in an attempt to smooth it down.. but to no avail. They were ready!
