The Texas weather agreed with Wyatt and Lucky. After a cold winter in the pines at their home ranch, it was quite the pleasant surprise to step out into the beautiful 70 degree day. The sky was a wash of bright afternoon blue, with rolling clouds building just beyond the red rock mountains that rose out of the desert like monoliths.
Wyatt guided Lucky towards the outdoor arena with a nudge from his knee. The stallion beneath him was still a little slow and sleepy, but Wyatt knew that a few laps would warm his mount right up. Lucky was the type of horse that didn't work unless he had to, and would have preferred to continue napping in the plush shaving in his temporary stall. In some ways, it made the dunskin horse easy to work with; one never had to worry about him causing mischief or being inappropriate or aggressive, but on the other hand, it took a bit of work to get the old boy into a working mindset. But, if nothing else, Lucky was reliable. He knew his job, and had a fair bit of natural cow sense, and more than a fair bit of actual cow experience.
Once the pair reached the area set aside for warm ups, Wyatt applied form pressure with his heels. With a sigh, Lucky broke into a slow lope. They made a few wide circles in both directions and, by the time their class was about to begin, Lucky was awake and ready. His black tipped ears with alert, and he had a noticeable pep in his step. Once he saw the small herd of cows from over the fence, he knew what was up, and he was ready!
Even as they stood by and watched the other competitors work their cows, Lucky remained eager. Wyatt was careful to observe the other riders and their horses, keen to learn something new, or to glean some small detail about the arena, the cows, or anything else that might help them in the ring. Lucky, on the other hand, had eyes only for the cows. His ears and eyes never left them.
Time passed quickly and before they knew it, it was their turn. Wyatt guided Lucky into the arena with a calm intent. They began their approach towards the nervous herd and set their eyes on the cow they wanted to single out. It was showtime!
