Description
New Zealand Falcon. Hunters/Farmers shoot these birds frequently and their numbers are in decline and they are becoming endangered. This was taken at Wingspan - a rehabilitation centre. This particular bird was free to fly away at any time. However it was fascinated by my camera and jumped fence post after fence post to get nearer and nearer to me. Eventually I had to change lens to my macro and I could have just reached out and touched it.Related content

Agreed. I love falcons. I would love to be able to watch a hunting one in real life, but I have not yet!

Oh no! How could anyone shoot such a majestic, regal bird, even if it was harmful to farming?

Beautiful raptor. Perhaps he was entranced by the reflection off the lens, or he could see his own reflection there.
