Description
I've been pretty bad with posting to here lately so I'm gonna |D try to see if I can get better about that, maybe make a compilation of some sketchbook things I put up on my instagram in the last month or so. Anyway I needed to do at least one Coco fan arts to get it out of my system, and I tried a new style with a brush I don't usually use, which... I'm not thrilled with how it came out but it is what it is SHRUGSRelated content

Imelda has no idea how much damage her own Anger has done to her family including Miguel future.

This is even sadder if you've read the books, because they expand on the story.
*SPOILERS*
The book mentions that being a musician was how he provided for his family and it's mentioned that Hector never left to seek fame, he was merely convinced by his childhood friend (Yeah the book mentions that Hector grew up with Ernesto and even considered Ernesto as his older brother) Ernesto to go on a short tour of several Mexican cities.
But Hector grew disorientated by the travelling and quickly grew homesick, so he decided to return home to his family. But we all know what happens next.
Lee Unkrich made all this worse by mentioning that Hector was only 21 years old when he was murdered by the 25 year old Ernesto and he mentioned that Imelda NEVER found out about Hector's death until she herself died.

Woah that’s way cool, I didn’t even know it was a book first! I kind of got the vibe that that’s what the situation was with why he left, being convinced by Ernesto and all, but the age thing is surprising since they look a bit older in the movie.

That’s what parenthood does to you, it makes you look older and more mature. The movie’s not based off a book, the book is an expansion of the movie.
Lee Unkrich mentioned that Héctor was born 1900, Ernesto was born 1896, Imelda was born 1899 and Coco was born 1918. Héctor was 21 when he died, Ernesto was 46, Imelda was 72 and Coco was 100.
In Coco: The Junior Novel it mentions that Héctor and Ernesto had left to go on tour but Héctor had begun to miss his family too much so he made the decsion to leave and return home to Santa Cecelia. But the songs they used on tour were the ones that Héctor had written himself into a notebook. So Ernesto had to murder Héctor in order to gain the songs. The book makes all this even worse by mentioning that Héctor was still alive when Ernesto took the songbook. ( 78.media.tumblr.com/90563814d9…)
It’s deeply expanded in Coco: A Story About Music, Shoes, and Family where it’s mentioned that Héctor and Ernesto had performed in Monterrey, San Luis Potosi, Toluca and Mexico City, as well as every little town in between. I made this little calculation as to how long they would’ve been travelling for and it appears that they would’ve planned to be away for two months, maximum, although the average tour length for your average local band going out on the road would be around 2 weeks at most with 11 or 12 shows.
Basically Héctor was working abroad during those two months, with him sending money home with the letters.
The book outright states in other terms that this was the first time that Héctor and Ernesto had gone on tour and that Héctor hated it because travelling confused him and he quickly grew deeply homesick. It also mentions that the songs had been written long before they’d left, and Héctor had hoped that during the tour he’d get inspiration for more. But not too long after leaving, Héctor realises that he regrets leaving and decides to return home.
But his so-called childhood best friend had murdered him, kept the death a secret from the family, leading Imelda to believe that Héctor had will fully abandoned them. Thus causing him to slowly fade from the afterlife.
Imelda’s anger towards Héctor is completely valid, because she was never informed of his death and likely believed that he’d deserted her with a child (He was 21 years old remember). So she had to carry that belief for a further 50 years before she died, and in death she didn’t allow Héctor a chance to explain what he thought had happened.
The whole thing is really heartbreaking because Héctor mentions that he considered Ernesto to be his primo (cousin) and was so happy that their friendship was going to stay intact despite his leaving. ( 78.media.tumblr.com/fa46c29fa3…) ( 78.media.tumblr.com/fe1b9d65d7…)

You can say that again! Seriously though, he had a daughter when he was eighteen, and he died when she was three, and his own wife never knew what became of him! That is all kind of unfair!

My word. I've seen the film the day of its premiere, and even though I
know what's about to happen, the foreshadowing is still eerie.

Eheh thanks!! I was kinda going for a shot from one of the flags at the beginning, and it didn’t occur to me until after I started looking for those references that this wasn’t actually how it looked in the film even though this is what I was remembering
