Common Freshwater Mermaid (Sirena dulcis)

Overview: Shy, artsy-type mermaid. Really likes humans but is always too nervous to spark a conversation with them. Instead of socializing, this mermaid spends its time making sculptures and paintings out of reeds and other local plants as a way of dealing with its complex emotions.

Habitat: The lakes, ponds, and rivers that are frequented by all the humans it dreams of befriending someday.

Diet: Hand-crafted, artisanal cattail juice and other organic cetacean-free pond foods.

Sightings: Common-- This species is overrepresented in waters near human settlements, so they're often sighted by people taking walks along lake or river shores. Good luck catching more than a glimpse of one, though.

Danger: Extremely low--One of the few mermaids that actually has a pleasant personality. All individuals recorded seem to have an extremely positive opinion of humans for some reason. It should be noted that none of the individuals chose to express this sentiment directly, instead electing to make their thoughts clear to researchers through obscure visual metaphors.

Additional notes: You can find many of its abstract expressionistic reed sculptures strewn along the lakeshore just outside our city.
