Description I thought this woman was amazing. She was so quick and intelligent. Her husband was a drummer and there to sit in with a Dixieland band.

It is one of my favorite portraits. She knew I was taking the picture.. but didn't change anything about her expression or pose. Thank you so much for noticing.

This is a knock your socks of portrait...and you captured it to perfection.
This I would print and hang.

That bar is just full of character. It is a very intersting place...used to be a cabbage factory. I suppose they canned it? ...not sure what they did with it. But it is still called the Cabbage Shed.

What a great face! In a way it's a pity the background is so bright, but the backlight is also interesting. I think I'd prefer a more moody shot of her, but beggars can't be choosers, and once again you've come up with a fascinating image. You'll have to invite her to your house just to get some more shots!

PS My wife doesn't come, she says she'd rather talk to me, and she can't if I'm up there. She can hear me sing for free anytime, poor thing.....maybe that's why......

myrnajacobs In reply to paulreid [2005-07-09 15:46:49 +0000 UTC]

I think that would be a good idea. I would love to have a bit of a 'dedicated' studio space for such things...sigh... there have been quite a few people I've wented to shoot like this one. I also have an idea for doing young women.. the slightly reubenesque one... in somewhat vintage clothing... we'll see what I can come up with on this.

You wife is a smart woman...so, of course, she wouldn't show up at your gigs. The really cool wives have lives of their own. LOL But I'd come to hear you. Do you have a recording?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

paulreid In reply to myrnajacobs [2005-07-09 15:52:26 +0000 UTC]

I have recordings, but none commercially available. They're mostly things friends have recorded over the years. In the last Irish band I was in we had some nice recordings from the mixing desk, but they were mainly ceilidhs with lots of background noise!

myrnajacobs In reply to paulreid [2005-07-09 15:57:25 +0000 UTC]

You should buy a Sony Minidisc R37. It is an amazing ... simply amazing recorder! You can often find them on e-bay for a good price. My husband records his performances often with it... (to learn and improve).. and it does recording that is very very high quality... even when it's a band! He uses some sort of small mic with it and just sets it up on a table out front. Its downloadable and very cool!

You deserve it!!!

paulreid In reply to myrnajacobs [2005-07-10 00:36:04 +0000 UTC]

I used a Sharp minidisk 772 which is fine for direct recording, but I never got a decent mic for it.

myrnajacobs In reply to paulreid [2005-07-10 00:41:51 +0000 UTC]

I suspect the mic is the secret...

Sony ECM-MS907 Stereo Microphone is the one he uses and says it is great... about $90 or so... and 'worth every penny' he says. LOL

At first glance, I thought she is sad...then I read the words you wrote,
I suddenly had a hunch that...it's complexness of ...love , I think.

myrnajacobs In reply to Alicy [2005-07-08 03:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think you are right. In addition to everything else... her husband looked a older than she... and I think he was not doing well. Very complex...

thanks for the comment.. I believe your first instinct is right... a bit sad.

I think she has the expression of a musicians wife! long suffering. *shudder* I also love the way you've captured the trio of men standing around in the background and the lamp light is focussed on the piano - speaks volumes to me.

Hahaha. Doesn't she look like she's enjoying herself.

I love the tones, the shadows, and the colours in this photo. It all works so well. Definitely something we encounter on a day to day basis, but displayed in such away that it seems unreal, movie-esque...
