Description
This is a concept for the OC White Hawk from the Enimotok. She's got only a minor appearance in Witchwinter, but maybe she'll show up againSince I haven't posted for some time and am still busy with concepting and working on stories and stuff, some more of that in between.

You tagged her as 'shaman', but shouldn't she be 'shawoman'?
Love the fur.

Actually it's just a lazy tag copy, you caught me. She's no shaman, so no shawoman either

Well, she looks very good. ^^
Is it the final concept? I think she looks different from the other pictures, or maybe it's just the haircut...

It's the last concept I have. Yes both the haircut and the facial configuration have changed some more, and will again I guess, because I'm still working to get the actual character right...

Well... maybe not in this incarnation... but she's far from being a minor character

So viele Sommersprossen, so schön!

I'm always split about it... I love the strong contrasts (like the arena and winter settings) but also the misty haze of forest scenes...

Similar physiognomy as your Maralah character, but I like her better, can't say why. Nice touch with the freckles, and the fur textures. How did you do the latter?

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Ardalos [2019-05-11 18:36:44 +0000 UTC]
They're both modeled on a central asian/steppe heritage (I just added the dark blonde hair as a twist on that theme) so they would look a bit similar.
Anyway the fur look is a special displacement map with some changes to displacement settings. Essentially it adds an extreme up/down displacement to the shader.

I do use a low gamma setting while rendering, which brings out the skin details in the midrange.

You have to compensate a bit with brightness and saturation, just give it a try. Depending on skin I would recommend between 0.7 to 1.2 instead of the DAZ/Iray default of 2.2

How do you work on the concept and story? Does this mean that you have several options for characters that you do not show us?
I found that people work on the concept differently. Each in its own way.

Interesting question. I'll try and answer it.
The starting point is like a seed. It consists of basic ideas. Like a setting and some main characters.
In this case:
Witches, Witchcraft, Witchhunters in a setting like the old east coast American colonies and the Salem Witch trials.
The existing of such a situation already defines a huge amount of background and parameters.
Then there a plot type and style.
In this case:
Horror and intrigue mystery in a style derived from authors from the beginning of the century such as Howard and Lovecraft.
This defines how stories will be constructed and which genre elements will fit well into it.
This setup defines a macro event and topic: Witchwinter (as apocalypse) which is long term.
Also, since the Witchhunters are the heroes, there have to be witches and warlocks as enemies.
So I create characters to establish the events.
The creation of the Maralah character established another group (the natives) and a lot concerning the workings of macro-magic with the outsiders
The Outsiders were (seemingly ) inspired by the Lovecraftian setting (see above).
This also added the Seafarers which were based on the Vikings. This idea simply forced itself, since America had Viking settlements first.
I simply assumed that they modeled themselves after the Kiev/Russian type and traded along the rivers, and did stay.
This defined the time. It had to be around what we would term the 16th century, even with somewhat different history.
For the coming story I added enemies of the witch type. This needed the definition of micro magic (personal magic) for them to use.
Also I had to define exemplary personal histories for them so I can understand their motivations. But this again also gave me a lot of insights on the setting.
If you wish it's like a function or a fractal. Or a feedback loop.
Once you seed it, it will keep creating into whatever direction you look.
There are few arbitrary decisions. Most of the next storyline is already complete, only more details are filled in.
So I do not really have 'several options' for characters.
The metion that White Hawk may return is not arbitrary.
You asked once, wether my stories are connected. I said no. That was not precise.
Arena and the Conquistadores are actually stand alone.
Witchwinter is something that Corwin of Amber would have called a 'Shadow'
If you are not familiar with the Princes of Amber, it's a Multiverse setting with realities gradually changing into other possible versions of reality.
In this case the White Hawks characters template exists in a much larger universe (and has been created a decade ago actually)...
I guess that was confusing

No prob, I think it's a fascinating topic. I used to read a lot of rp rules and the infamous dragon magazine just because worldbuilding and storytelling always got me hooked...

Not at all. It looks like you are creating a story as a construction set.
I recently found a little roguelike game similar to your setting: witches, elder gods, inquisitors in funny hats. Grim Dawn, heard about this?

I actually did play it a bit, years ago.
But I've played the first and second Diablo and it's copies to the death when they were released and this kind of game no longer holds my attention. Which is kinda sad, course I liked those back then
The analogy to a construction set holds to some degree.
I create stories all the time (not to mention ridiculously boring software) so it may seem like a mechanic approach.
But it's more like a intuitive thought process of exploring imagination.
