They do sometimes. It's all about having a light touch.

Hi there! I'm here on behalf of #Traditional-Artists , giving to you all the feedback this piece gained at our last Critique Night!
I hope it is helpful and you can use it for your future work! =ziinyu said:
“Your control of the medium is astounding, I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine acrylic on feathers would be a very delicate procedure indeed. The structure and values of the horse are great, very strong, very emotive. You have beautiful edges and gradients supporting your subject, creating for a piece with a great deal of depth to it. You have such beautiful natural colors and blue hues in the feathers, it would be nice to bring some of those into the painting, especially some cool tones in the shadows.
As for the supporting elements, I love the natural feel and layering of the other feathers, they are a graphic element of their own accord. The only thing I question is the outline. Everything else in this piece is organic in quality, yet this is strikingly geometric, it traps some of the energy of the piece internally.
Very nice though, truly a great accomplishment in choosing your media to accent your subject.” *pbird12 said:
“I don't know that I can critique this as such, perhaps just a big speak of appreciation and a point of view It is amazing, using feathers as a canvas is amazing to begin with, but added to that the beautiful dimensional painting, takes it to a whole new level. The leather, the beads, it's all perfect ... I have no other words ... beautiful! The only area that I think is distracting from your beautiful work is the white frame, its very linear and not entirely fitting with your delicate work.”

“I just love the work you do on feathers, it is so unusual and beautiful! The colours you picked, both for the painting and for the smaller feathers, fit the theme very well, it creates a nice feeling of serenity.
Anatomically it is well done, I think the horse's right eye (to our left) is a wee bit far up, but apart from that you really managed to capture shape and shadows of the head beautifully.
I can't get my head around the white outline. On one hand, it doesn't communicate with the soft colours and materials of the feathers, but on the other hand it makes a strong border and emphasizes the black background.
All in all, it is a stunning piece in material and technique, and feeling for detail.”

These are fantastic! My first thought was Macaw when I saw the pic, and I was surprised to see that I was right. They do make a fantastic background, but I really admire feather artists - you make it seem so easy!
Your painting skills are amazing. I love how you've used blue in the shadows so the horse looks like it fits very well. My favourite part, however, is the fact that you've painted on two feathers one picture! That's amazing <33

Thank you! I'd like to think I make it SEEM easy... But each painting has its own struggles and they usually take me more time than I think they will. I've lately gotten really into the framing part. So much so that I get to the point I want to get a new feather painting done just to be able to frame it!
I'm surprised a few people picked up on the blue shadow. That was something I did very subtly on purpose so that it would look more natural. But it's good that it is appreciated! It's good when people notice the tiny details that are added into artwork.

Thanks! I was kind of surprised at how realistic I got the texture of the horse. Sometimes we surprise ourselves, don't we?

Etsy is pretty nice! The fees are VERY affordable and all of their policies are reasonable. I'm pretty new to the site myself, but I did manage to sell this painting there!

Beautiful, you've selected the palate of colours very well. The faintest himt of blue in the white horses shading really sets it off. :3

That's cool that you noticed the bit of blue that I sneaked in there. It was a very light wash of blue that I thought would enhance the shadowy parts. I also put a hint of yellow around the more lit sides of the horse.

I LURV THEM MUCHLY... XD I was thinking of a parrot before ( really a red-tailed cockatoo >.>... ) with the feathers being a happy medium there ... freee feathers, cleaned/ taken care of when you get them all the fun stuffs! and soooooooo pretty. They really do make great backdrops to the paintings.
