Description
At over 50 meters in length, the ichneumoplods are among the longest--and many would insist most visually impressive--of the flying saurthropodian pollinators known collectively as Apocrititans. Buoyancy is provided by an anatomically integrated musculoskeletal network of vascular pneumatic sacs filled with electrolytically produced hydrogen gas, enabling aerobatic feats otherwise impossible for these massive animals even in the reduced gravity of their megafloral homeworlds. Reproductive parasitoids like all Apocritans, ichneumoplods bore into the woody boles of flowering megatrees to paralyze and lay their eggs in larval buprestodontids sheltering beneath the bark. The long, coiling tail stinger wrapped around the repeatedly bifurcating hind limbs often lends an impression of deceptive multipedality to these hexapodal dinowasps.Diplodocus x ichneumon wasp hybrid:

Probably distantly related to both
and
It's subtle, but I tried to imply some Sinosauropteryx and Kulindadromeus in the genetic makeup. There's also a bit of hornet moth (versus true hornet) and maybe even some snake and pangolin in there.

It's wonderful how visually pleasing and convinving these are.

Thanks so much! Naturalistic plausibility is what I aim for, so that's a very gratifying response.

Really like the pencil work here. Puts me in mind a bit of Brian Froud's Dark Crystal concepts.

Oh man, I love those! I could go for an entire book of nothing but those, in fact.

Not sure which a friend of mine in college had, but it was something like this: www.amazon.com/World-Dark-Crys…
LOTS of cool critters.

Yeah, I was thinking of the pencil sketches on the book's endpapers. Also, apropos!

what do they pollinate exactly? I mean it must be one awesome plant!

Yeah, I'm working here from the premise of what I call a "megaflora" ecosystem--essentially panspermic versions of terrestrial plants scaled up to gargantuan sizes:
I still need to do a "Gardenworld" version of one of these scenes with giant flowers, but if you imagine these guys the size of dinosaurs I think you get a pretty good sense of what I'm envisioning:

(I may have overstated the scale on this one, btw--I think anywhere from 20'-60' would be a more realistic average size range for "flying sauropods," even given their buoyancy adaptations and a lower-gravity environment.)

Whoa, that's awesome!
I'm intrigued to see what you will managed to do with those.
By the way, maybe you happened to come across plant that is capable of withstanding strong winds? I need one for my world but I can't find anything suitable.

Let's see, can you tell me more about what you're looking for? What's your environment like? I mean, are you thinking of something analogous to a wind-tolerating terrestrial plant (like a shore/lodgepole pine), or like something that lives in Jovian cyclones or something...?

No, exactly the terrestrial plants.

I've had the displeasure of being stung by an ichneumon once. I imagine something like this would somehow be even worse O.O

Yeah x.x at the time, I said that even though I'd never been shot by anything (still haven't; thankfully), it felt like how I imagined a shot would feel albeit from something like, not too too powerful but still enough to burn and sting.
