Yes........fall in the North is the best time to track these beautiful animals because they are more interested in mating and will not run so easily.

That's true. Ironically, though, I tend to see more in the Spring/Summer months than Fall when I want to.

In early fall they will be rubbing the velvet off their antlers and setting up runs. A buck will circle this run continuously and rub on trees to polish his rack. He will also set up scrapes by clearing leaves under a tree with an overhanging branch. He leaves his scent in that scrape. Does will check out scrapes and leave their scent as well. They chew on the branch and can taste each other. He may be watching and waiting and if she is in estrus they will mate. Since they stay pretty much close to their runs and scrapes you can nestle in and camoflage yourself so as to observe them at close range. Does in estrus will attract Bucks so you can observe the bluffs or fights which take place. Be careful though because these large Bucks are full of Testosterone and will challenge even you if you get too close or push them too hard. They will show their teeth and wave their large racks at you as a message to leave.

Thanks a lot for the info! Being in school, I haven't had the time to go explore areas that may be good deer habitat, but hopefully now that I've graduated, I can look into things like that more.

It takes diligence, so don't get discouraged. Every trip will make you more aware of their habits and movements. The key is knowing where they will go if you spook them. This way you can hope for another chance later in the morning. read about the animal you're interested in shooting as well.
I am starting all over here in Florida, and the brush is much thicker, the leaves don't fall, and there are 27 different species of snakes here. Hoohah!

You sound like most artists.........we all have that streak in us, which makes us think we are not worthy. I joined DA to try to find a market for my work, but nothing happened, and it was a lot of work to post Hi-res prints. Maybe I was wrong and should re-consider.

Sometimes the animal is just standing in front of a good background. Usually I have to try to move them into the sun, or out of the brush without spooking them. This one was right there quietly watching me stalk a sizable buck.
