I imagine the Big House option won out: Hobbits have big families.
In the future, Sam had many descendants and they, taking the Red Book in charge, moved to the Tower Hills in a new part annexed by the Shire.
In a later age, that part of MiddleEarth becomes an island named Albion and there copies of the Red Book come down to an Anglo-Saxon monk who translated it and it is that translation that came to Tolkein...
