Here's a mini tutorial of a little trick I discovered when I want to add real looking skin pores to a portrait!
This technique works especially great around the cheeks, nose and brow!
*The brush I used to get the spots was made by DanLuVisiArt in this brush pack fav.me/d1ytm3r (Texture Brush 400)
NOTE: This technique doesn't work %100 of the time. (Even for me) You just gotta play around with it in different areas, work it in, go over it and work it in some more
<--- This is an example of it being successful after some toying around (his cheeks, nose and upper lip)
<--- The actual pic/final result in the tutorial.

I had forgotten that I had this tutorial saved in my favorites. I'm working on two portraits right now, so I'm going to try this out! It looks amazing

Thanks for the drop shadow idea. I always used to delete my pores layer because they end up looking so fake, but no more thanks to your great tutorial!

do you know if i can use this effect on gimp 2.6. i tried to add the drop shadows but it was not the same at all, maybe i'm doing something wrong.

Never used Gimp. But can you change the color of the drop shadow?
Instead of a usual black "shadow", try making it a darker value of the skin color, and keep it close to the dots

i think that gimp's drop shadow doesn't have some of the features that photoshop has, maybe i'll just stick to using brushes to make pores.

Giving out some pointers and techniques is the least I can do for the support I get

Very interesting indeed. Maybe I'll try to port it to Gimp.

Wow this is really cool. I wish I knew how to paint so I could use this. Its weird, in most industrial photography settings I am forced to do the opposite.

I still have trouble with basic anatomy and yet here I am trying to learn advanced 'coloring' techniques -w-;
Ah well, I've had trouble finding a pore tutorial that doesn't want you to download brushes or make your own using their standards. This I feel like I have some leeway with and maybe can actually use xD;
Long story short, thanks :3

I never thought of drawing the pores on a separate layer..and adding drop shadows. I hope this can speed up my drawing. Thanks. Can't wait to start using it.

It beats painting them in one at a time

Great technique mate! Very clever. I suppose another way you could do this is to render a photoshop lighting effect + alpha on the final pore layer but I guess it wouldn't have the updatability.
