DEITY
I had wanted to draw Mystic with long hair, and this is what came of it... The drawing was originally a sketch out of boredom that I had done with the intention of testing my copic markers..and I went a bit overboard on it. I had a lot of fun with it, and am satisfied despite whatever problems it may have.
an image from the past, and perhaps the future. So would he be a god or a devil, do you think?
Character is my own.
Medium:
Pencil outline
Micron inking
Copic Marker ( [link] )
gouache
CG touch up
(Music for inspiration: Ghost in the Shell opening, Shaman's Fairy Tale, and Loreena McKennit's 'The Mystic's Dream'..how fitting!)

This may be an odd thing to say, but I like your old art a lot better than your new art. I miss pictures like this. Your new art seems a lot more bubbly and whimsical. Do you ever draw much in this dark style anymore?
Maybe you were going through a dark time when you made all this... But I always loved these pictures. I would say the pictures you made of this character were some of my favorites of all time. I miss this style. Sure, your recent pictures of cute little people are really good. But these were always my favorites.

I was a teenager with a LOT of free time on my hands. I no longer have the time to dedicate to such elaborate things as this... and people grow and change. I would be very sad if I was still producing the exact same artwork I was producing nearly 10 years ago. I want a career in art (animation) and need varried styles in order to succeed... quicker art in order to be able to produce the work load. I still do "dark things" (trickster priest on my front page is a recent image, the roxas one) but it's also amoney problem. Currently I have no money for the traditional supplies I used on this painting.
I am a little curious when I get messages like this as it does seem people have turned a blind eye to the dark works I still upload and only focus on the cute works (the little girl is a film character for the short I am making so i've been drawing a lot of her). I still draw dark works but something of this scale (this image took a couple of weeks... almost a month? to do) was something I simply did when I had a lot of time on my hands. I look at it today and all i see are anatomical, compositional and tonal flaws. It is fine to like the older pieces, of course, but I've also learned over time that less can be more in the long run.
I still do dark works and detailed works like this, but they are fewer and far between and they are indeed digital. I'm not switching entirely from one to the other, i'm just expanding my abilities to do many things.

I noticed the priest was an exception. Saw that one a while ago... Haha.
I've watched you through the years, perhaps the entire time I've been on this site. At least 6 or 7 years. I still like your art, but I can't help but notice how dramatically it's changed.
Of course that's not a bad thing. Like you said, it would be depressing if your art hadn't changed at all in ten years. It's a touchy subject, I guess. But I really prefer those old drawings to the things you've uploaded over the past couple of years.
Now this is coming from someone who has no knowledge/concern with your career as an animator. xP From a complete "bystander" perspective... So I'm not thinking about what's going on in your life. But to me, those old pictures are far more beautiful and full of emotion.
They'll always be some of my favorite pictures on this site. Unparalleled not for the "quality" or whatever, but for the emotion. And for the things they made me feel. I can't help but look at the newer drawings and feel nothing. Haha... Maybe it's because back then you did it for pleasure, and now you don't have the time to pour into personal expression like this. I don't know you, though. It's just a shot in the dark.
Do you ever revist that one character you used to draw? Mystic, I think his name was. Purple eyes, black hair, etc...

In truth a lot of my works now are more full of emotion lol back then I was just a teenager concerned with drawing something "pretty", my emotions tend to pour out more now that I'm older and I'm not restricting myself to a style, a process, a formula or so on. These old pieces are highly detailed and I feel a lot of the detail and color hides the poor art beneath it. Of course it's fine if you like them, but from my POV as the artist I can pretty much assure you these old pieces were done as eye candy for the most part lol. My own personality is probably a lot different from what people may assume from my older works. For example, [link] was a highly emotional piece that I put a lot of thought/emotion/planning into. the DEITY piece was inspired more by a desire to draw something pretty and CLAMPish in style and I was listening to a piece of music that had a sort of shamany feel to it.
That isn't to say that these image are void of emotion. I tend to "roleplay" through my art and, in doing so, it could just be that you like this character and I have not drawn (or in this case, "been" ) him in a very long time. I've always been a firm believer that you should be able to feel SOME emotion through a piece to make it really worth anything.
I still draw for pleasure tho... I just want to make sure you don't think i've lost my soul or anything. I'm doing what i've wanted to do since I was a child, work in animation and cartoons. of course I like dark works a lot and I do still do them ("Trickst Priest" isn't the only exception tho, there are still more lol ) I think a lot of my older works were more a long the lines of "false advertising" because I was afraid of doing anything different from what people liked (and when i did it was often met with criticism or completely ignored). People liked dark works, they liked the detail and since I had the time to do such works I was able to do them.
I will say one thing that may be a bit surprising lol it's way harder to draw in a simple refined style than works like this. the time it takes to do it is simply due to it being a traditional piece and how much time the actual application and care of color takes when you can't mess up (or use layers). The actual problems of the art are easily hidden in a detailed image... however constructing a solid but simple design where you can't hide your flaws is incredibly difficult, but of course, it will look easier as it's more simple.... kind of a strange paradox I think.
sorry for rambling! I'm not angry or upset, just voicing my thoughts and I tend to get a little wordy when I let my thoughts roam free.
if I did revisit that character I would likely re-design him to get rid of some of my teenage influences.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I haven't been online that much lately though.
This is all really interesting to me, honestly. It's funny how I misinterpreted it. I always thought those pictures would have been a glimpse into the heart of the person who drew them. If I had to guess at your personality from the drawings alone, I would have thought you were a lot different. I guess this should be a lesson for me - You can't assume those things about an artist without getting to know them first.
I suppose when I was younger I could relate to those pictures a lot, too. They appealed to me a lot when I was an angsty, depressed kid. xP But I still like things like that. I still enjoy them to this day. It just surprises me now that I know the way you went about them. You make it sound more mechanical than like an outpour of emotion. So I had the wrong idea I guess. Hmmm.
I looked at some of your newer pictures and I would agree that they have a lot of emotion, just a different kind. Very, very different. But I tried to see what you mean about flaws with the lines/tones/etc. I like your newer Slayers pictures a lot (even though I never watched that show very much.)
Admittedly I wouldn't know what it's like to spend a month on a single picture - I'm not much of an artist, I Just draw every so often when I'm bored. And I don't have the patience... I always get fed up and give up after only a little while. So most of my pictures are rushed and not very good at all. I can't imagine working on the same picture for a month at a time.
But it was interesting to hear all this from you. I understand what you mean a lot more now...
