Description At last, here by popular demand and just in time for Hallowe'en, the wing tutorial!

I'm sooo very sorry this has taken me FOREVER to finish. I'm not really that good at making tutorials, and I hope it's not totally confusing.
Please try and ignore all the typos and spelling mistakes.

If it really doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll do my best to fix it.

Again sorry for it taking forever. My apologies.

Fantastically helpful tutorial. I'm wanting to do cosplay tutorial videos on my YouTube. Would it be alright if I used your tutorial? I would specify that it is yours in the vid.

Okay so i have down the basic premise of how im going to make my flutterbat wings thanks to this tutorial and another. Saw you haven't made feathered wings yet so I'll also offer the second tutorial ill be using for anyone who may be doing feathered wings jiajem.com/tutorials/wings/ None the less, I do have a question... When we make the wings and we wrap the fabric tight around the wires, if we were to say, bend the wires after completion for added effect like you did in your second picture, would that provide stress on the glue bindings and might accidentally cause it to separate? If that is the case and we plan on bending some of the wires for added effect, should we glue the fabric a little looser? Jw! Thankies! ^-^

nolwen In reply to Bunneh-kins [2014-10-08 17:46:06 +0000 UTC]

I've never had a problem with the bending after gluing.  And I've bent and reshaped these quite a bit.  The glue paired with the fabric does remain flexible for some time.

Someday I'd love to make feathered wings.  Thanks for the link!

This wire wouldn't be susceptible to bending, would it? (If someone were to bump into the wings.)

Curiosity, do you have to wrap all the wire or only the parts shown in the photos?

Actually, do you need to wrap at all? What is the exact purpose of wrapping the wires?

Also, how did you harness your wings?

I will be wearing a tShirt for my cosplay and was wondering if you would have any tips.

Thanks so much! These were the PERFECT wings!

This was my first cosplay and I knew I needed the wings to be the best part! >w<

I found that clip of the first set of wings on youtube I believe and practically spat tea everywhere! >.>' The wings being flexible is just so perfect! and they were! -dies- I love the way they bob slightly when you walk, it makes them look that much more real!

I even bent the claws so that I could walk around through the con with them clasping one another. people stopped me just to see the wings spread! XD

Thanks again! this pattern has not seen the last of me! There will be wings! So many more!!!!!

I'm planning on making wings similar to this design for a cosplay of mine, but I want them to be more like sleeves, so that my arms become a part of the wing instead of having the wings separate. Do you have a recommendation for doing something like that?

WiseLoad43 [2013-01-03 01:45:05 +0000 UTC]

I have a question. Do you think these could be usable in a quadsuit? You say they're pose-able so do you think it is possible? Cause these look like they'd work great. But, looks can be deceiving. If you could answer thiis it would be very much appreciative!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nolwen In reply to WiseLoad43 [2013-01-03 05:51:24 +0000 UTC]

Um, can you explain a quadsuit please?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WiseLoad43 In reply to nolwen [2013-01-03 14:07:10 +0000 UTC]

I'll do my best. A quadsuit is like a fursuit except that your on all fours (with the help of arm stilts) to look like the animal/creature your cosplaying as. Now most wings done for quadsuits (that have them) are usually up and out and not necessarily side to side. (If you want more info on a quadsuit check out gryphern on youtube) However I loved how the shape of the wings and effect they had (from what I saw on youtube) looked great for a Toothless quadsuit (from How To Train Your Dragon). The harness might need to be adjusted but, If they are pose-able as you say do you think they'd still work out the same? (Not to mention being able to fold them up so they don't whack anyone when walking around in it).

nolwen In reply to WiseLoad43 [2013-02-06 05:10:08 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply.

they should work ok for that. As long as you don't make them too heavy because they may droop a bit when they are laying horizontal. You may just need to reinforce the arm of the wing with more wire. I'd say just start with the wire structure and play around with different numbers of wires (use masking tape to tape them together for now) until you get the right effect. And then use the lightest fabric that you can.
And they are very easy to fold up when walking around.

I hope that helps.

Oh, and one more thing. (Sorry about all the questions) but were did you buy your wire? And how much did it cost? Cause all thee wire I've seen cost tons of money and I'm not sure if I'm willing to drop so much money for it. Again sorry bout all the questions. >_<

Mauraelle In reply to WiseLoad43 [2013-08-08 23:40:19 +0000 UTC]

i know this is an older message BUT i thought i'd jump at it. do not go to craft stores for the wire, go to home depot or lowes. they sell HUGE spools of 16 gauge wire for $9 (200ft) and 14 gauge wire for $8 (100ft). its called multi-purpose wire.

I'm wanting to make wings like this but I'm worried about wearing it in a trader's hall which is busy with lots of people... I also would have difficulty going through doors. If I follow this tutorial, would I be able to fold them in to avoid destroying them in an environment like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nolwen In reply to xAi-chanxx [2012-11-29 23:51:04 +0000 UTC]

I wore these in just such situations and all I had to do was grab the wings by the claws and hold them in front of me while I walked around. Then if someone wanted a photo I would just let go and they would bounce back into position. Or you can fold them up behind you if you don't want to hold them. They are fully pose-able.

alright, so say you're making wings to make them look bony (like..limited skin and stuff) How would one exactly do that? Would I just leave the wire structure plain without fabric or...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nolwen In reply to xXLizzardBreathXx [2012-09-17 20:26:48 +0000 UTC]

As in, skeletal wings? Or wings that just have most of the skin torn or tattered off? Because I can't really help if they are just bones (I've never done that before) but I have some ideas for the latter.

xXLizzardBreathXx In reply to nolwen [2012-09-18 05:02:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah something like that! I"m trying to figure it out I know I could use some wire for like the lining or something, but...yeah..
