It's either intentional lightening of the skin (e.g. lighter brown base skin color) or the artist isn't accustomedΒ to drawing characters with brown skin. Look at the face area especially.Β
Lighting affects different skin colors and tones differently. I've seen this many times, and the skill of the artist isn't really a factor. It's about whether or not they have learned, specifically, how to draw darker skin.

its not though , its called color theory. it is something that takes a while to learn and i havent learnt it yet but if her was as dark as it was in the game it would pop out too much and the background would look too out of place , here is a vid on people thinking that everything is whitewashed just cause the artist knows a thing called color theoryΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiyU7pβ¦

Color theory is just colors looking good together. It's not the same as actually lightening the skin.
When artists lighten skin, it's independent of other factors like shading and highlighting and color theory.Β
Also, no artist worth their salt is going to alter a character's skin for a background when they are the only character in the image and the background isn't at all focal.Β
Look, I'm not saying the character is whitewashed, just asking why they decided to go with a lighter color
