Description A sample image showcasing more mainstream fantasy. Of course, being me, I skipped the heroics and went for a bruised & bloodied take instead.

Well maybe she should have been dressed in proper armour if she wanted to avoid getting so beaten up.

I love how you managed to interject some of the grit that this sort of fantasy art is often lacking - the colours, the pose and the atmosphere are all fantastic.

Really excellent, I think the lighting could be a little stronger, and the hands a little bigger, but besides that stunning work. I would try to explore different faces though.

A couple of critiques. Other than the chainmail bikini stereotype - if you're not going to armor all the rest of you, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to armor ONLY the breasts and genitalia - the sword is about half again too short and narrow. That kind of wide grip and crosspiece is for a full-sized greatsword, and what you've got there is a much shorter and narrower blade, one which she could readily wield one-handed.

Beyond that, a heck of a composition.

What if he wasn't going for a great sword? There are so many different types of weapons in all different cultures. And covering the privates are obviously for being politically correct...

It only shows she was fighting hard. I love how the woman actually has MUSCLE, and a SWORD. Most of the time when we see ladies in forests... they are the victim. I like this version much, much better

Awesome job! I everything about this, the intense expression through bruised and swollen, cuts, blood smears and trail, .. background details, light reflection on water, moss..

I do have a minor complaint, the curve of the buttocks should be slightly lower... as it is she's got no waist, and the hips is almost sitting her lower rib.. and her hands look kinda small...

besides that.. I can look at this for hours....

navate In reply to amie689 [2011-02-28 05:30:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the crits. That's not her butt, though, it's her lower back; the curve is her waist. Her hips are right at her belt. Her stance is probably not reading clearly because she's halfway behind the tree. I checked in the mirror just now and my own back curves that high when I stand like that. Think you're right about the hands.

.. the indispensable mirror, what'll artists do without them... another reason for my perception could be that I'm just too used to the model types we get on dA

Whatever it is.. I still enjoy staring at this...

I use both, and the end result is usually something that resembled neither. Which I prefer! I made a short blurb about how I use references in my blog post for this image: [link]

cool. While on the subject, Any recommendations on good Anatomy books? I rarely use references but theres a marked improvement when i do, so im hoping to work with more in my future work...

navate In reply to Druakim [2011-02-25 16:06:57 +0000 UTC]

I own Artistic anatomy by Dr. Paul Richer and Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck. These are both very cut and dry books focused on bones, muscles, veins, movement, and surface anatomy. They don't focus on drawing skills. I suggest you also find some good figure drawing books, which are aimed at teaching drawing skills, if you have trouble with anatomy.

i have a few. But always on the hunt for more good books, My anatomy is pretty decent but always handy to have something on hand. Just havent found the books ive seen to be exactly what im looking for.Anyway cheers for the replies, Really like your work, its got a down and dirty feel to it which i like.

You have an incredible talent. I'm still working on my first painting and on digital. I'm also working on colours/shade/light. Never give up painting and have fun with it and hope you be around the correct people, positive people, and do better decision that helps you have a better year. Keep up the great job my fellow artist.

It's great to see another piece from you! I love everything about her: facial expression, pose, and the scene she's in. I feel as though out of frame there is some huge beast she's just destroyed.

Also, loved seeing your feature in ImagineFX this month! I'm extremely envious of your workspace and loved the little tips you offered throughout the magazine issue.

Cheers
