Description
This was my piece for the Illustration Master Class. I chose the "Dragons and figure" assignment. My first serious painting in oils since high school, ack! I'm not totally happy with it, but it came out well all things considered.
(Yes, I know her proportions are off. I lacked the confidence to correct the problems and was more concerned about simply finishing the image.)
18x24", oil on board.
Original is available; please note me for details.

I may not be a traditional artist, at least not no one who can draw to save his life
But I don't see the dimensions being off or anyway unrealistic. In Fact I love the look on her face, it's pensive and almost conflicted about the dragons. I think it is excellent work. keep that up.

The IMC is a private course for fantasy and sci-fi illustrators, so it's not that surprising.

ah, however i bet if i did a course like that i typically get a choice of assignments that didn't include dragons

I recently dove into traditional art again to create some Christmas gifts and even though it's more rewarding than digital art (being able to physically create the colours, smells, and feeling the brush in your hand) it's a lot harder for me to correct mistakes when it's on canvas. So yeah, I know what you mean.
This is really nice though. I thought it was digital at first hehe. How was your class? Is it a local class or for something online?

IMC (The Illustration Master Class [link] ) is in Amherst, MA during the summer. It's fantastic. One week of lectures and crits from the best in the industry, staying up to 2 am painting, and having discussions you can only have around other illustrators. The best part of it was actually the fact that there wasn't a single slacker student there. Everyone is totally bent on improving their craft. It's an incredible atmosphere! I am going again this year because I was to see how much more I can learn now that I'll have time to get more comfortable and confident with real paint. This image from last year was one huge experimental plunge.

That is awesome. I wish there was something like that around here. It seems pretty expensive but I would love to go next summer. I'm sure you grew a lot and learned a lot. Those kind of atmospheres are great for furthering one's talent, not only for yourself but for others too since you're all learning together.
Is it traditional media only? If so I'm sure that's another challenge all together but it's rewarding too in its own right, especially for illustrators, no matter if it's fantasy or sci-fi, since most everything is digital now a days.

It's not so expensive if you think about it. The cost includes rooms and food, and considering the faculty and how hands-on the whole experience is... it's way more useful than anything college taught me, put it that way.
People come from all over the world to attend. They have a digital room now too, but I go to work in traditional because I know I'll learn more.

That's true, I just don't know if I have the money for all three installments hehe. But yeah, I'd like to do it in the near future because it is a good deal.
I'm not sure which I'd choose because I'd love to learn more in both fields, but maybe digital just for kicks hehe.

Ah, the stress of art exams!
I've spawned some crappy oil paintings thanks to those (I have no skill with oil paint what so ever.)

Fuckin' oil paint, man. Had to use it in my freshman year... never again. I don't get how you guys do it, but whatever it is, keep doing it.
