Oh the first layer was a piece of cloth, I pressed it in to the clay get the base texture if you look along the edges you will see a bit of a crossnit.
Then I indented the long vertical and horizontal lines with a dull razor blade.
The center is a reversed jewlery finding, I pressed in. Sometimes you have to look at things in a relief way when working with clay..not so much a indent as what kind of raised marking it will make.
Added details like the binding lines and the rivets..
A little dark acrylic paint wash into the receses after it was baked,Then my gold marker pen lightly about the surface to create highlights.
As I said, a little playing around with on hand items and you will find some interesting everyday items as tools

Thanks this was just one of the books for the Treetop but the effect turned out pretty nice, a lot of learning during the build .
