Description
Narratively, Jen and Kira are foils to the Gruenaks. As, in the end they survived. Considering the cruel nature of Skeksis, things could have been much different.On my tumblr post, everyone's complaining how they're going to get nightmares from this. Apologies in advance, but I worked hard and I want to share it.

As soon as I saw this it sent chills down my spine, but in the best way possible *o* Not a detail is missed, from the stitches to the dull matching clothes and shortened hair, and the warm yet undoudebtly sad color scheme... it's unbearably tragic and beautiful at the same time and I adore it

One last thing, which is more based on my headcanon that Jen is Deet's child - is that rather than being the force that could drive the darkening away, he is being consumed by it, in this image - shown by the dark lines on his face.

I like how their hair has been cut short. Considering how all the Gelfling have long hair, I'd assume that cutting it off against their will is probably very humiliating.

Thanks for noticing that! It was one of the few little details I put in, but didn't comment on because I didn't want to be too wordy.
It would have probably been an act of convenience for the Skeksis, so the gelfling wouldn't have their hair in the way while working, but it would have been soul-crushing for the two, even Jen who keeps his hair relatively short.
I sort of headcanon that growing one's hair out long is a sign of adulthood, since Kira, Jen, and Bobb'n were all depicted with short hair as children.

What's weird is in the side-novels' illustrations, a lot of the male Gelfling are depicted with relatively short hair, especially Gurjin and Kylan. They look kind of silly like that, tbh

I've read all but the fourth book, since the library never seems to have it when I come around.
And same! I made one of my friends watch a few episodes; her favorite character (besides Hup and Deet) is Rian because "he's a pretty boy." Though I think whenever I decide to start drawing the Gelfling again, I might try my hand at the dumb short-haired designs

Alas, both my local libraries do not have the series yet. I got them to re-purchase the first, making of the dark crystal book, but not the new one.
I showed my friend, and her fave was Tavra. She ended up texting me late at night, complaining about Tavra's death.

I like Tavra too. I'm interested in the significance of the Arathim that ran away when she passed. It's similar to something that happens in the books, but I'm not sure it's going in the same direction.

Or you can do what some of my friends did for novels in my English classes. Order a book online, treat it with kid gloves and read quickly, then send it back for a refund, like the library but with postage
I'm optimistic about the possibility of Season 2. Next month in England they're holding the first official "Great Con-Junction" event, and a bunch of the cast and crew will be there. An official convention seems like a good sign that the franchise isn't dead yet. Not to mention the video game, which looks kind of fun.

Honestly, I wouldn't pay attention to the crowd that complains. They mostly do it to get a rouse out of others.
Me personally though, I think this looks fantastic! I really like how the style fits a sort of story book aesthetic with the coloring and overall composition! Its a very interesting and sad comparison to the Gruenaks, but in their case, they survived and beat the odds! It does make one wonder though, how differently things could have been if it had not gone as it did.
