Description
It's time for another piece from my archives to be re-scanned, remastered and generally spruced-up for presentation here on DA, and this time it's an image of an orcy nature. Yay!Originally doodled in 2004, as a gift for toppingly talented arty fellow DaBoz (whose nifty work is on display over here ), this illo features his character Raguk (the hairy one) preparing to help get rid of a pesky insect for the benefit of Rab, an orc who'll be familiar to anyone who used to frequent Crazy Lizard Studios.
For the unfamiliar, Rab Glaschweg (to use his full name) is a highland orc whose general demeanour is one of wild-eyed snorting belligerence. It's a bit of an act, though – beneath the surface he's a thoughtful, learned individual with a talent for painting and a love of reading, but he feels compelled to play up the whole What-Are-You-Lookin'-At?-(Headbutt) thing in public because there aren't many highland orcs left in the world, and the world at large expects them to be loud, angry and inclined to nut adversity right between the eyes (or so he thinks). It should be noted, however, that it doesn't take much to provoke genuine crossness from Rab, and being whacked across the back of the head with a bit of old tree is exactly the sort of thing that can inspire irritability. Raguk, meanwhile, is a well-meaning and helpful chap with a regrettably unsubtle approach to problem-solving. Nurse, the screens!
This one was made with the standard mixture of ink for the outlines and pencils for the colours, and I've modified the speech bubble with digital text; the original lettering was done by hand, but the spacing was a bit iffy (and it needed more words). I'm especially pleased with the lighting effects here, and with the backdrop as a whole – I hadn't previously tried to draw scenery using only coloured pencils, and I reckon it turned out quite smartly for a first attempt.
Raguk, as mentioned previously, is the cunning creation of DaBoz. Copyright infringers will be swatted with extreme prejudice.

I know I'm a bit late to respond, and for as long ago as you did this I still don't feel I've fully expressed my gratitude and love for it, but then again I probably never could.
It's an amazing piece, your backgrounds, much like your foreground characters are absolutely beautiful, and seemingly flawless, without match. I could probably go on for hours stating how immaculate this looks to me but...well, I'll just end up being repetitive.
I do love this image though, it's my favorite of all your works, and probably will always be. Rab and Raguk have a very special place in my heart, and, it's with this pictures return I really feel inspired to bring the stunted little orc and his best Bud, Rab back. I know I've said this alot but I do want to do a lot with the too, finding the time is hard but I'll really work to make the time now.
Thank you again for this, I know at the time it was completed, I didn't deserve it...but even on my best behavior, I'd be hard pressed to deserve such wonderful work without a pound or two paid for it.
thanks for being such a swell guy, and such an astounding artist.

Thanks! And fear not, Rab's got a very hard head. It'll probably do more damage to the branch.

There will definitely be further pics featuring Rab and his compatriots; I'm not sure exactly when, but they'll appear here as soon as I've drawn them!

Really? Good lord. Were you the one doing the swatting, or the one sitting quietly with a book and no idea about the incoming knobbly branch?

Many an orc would agree with you, although possibly not Rab.

It's impossible to be absolutely sure, but I suspect bandages and swearing may be involved.
