Description
Here's a Samus I've been noodling since Metroid Prime 3 came out. Last night I found the drawing, erased most of it, and slopped in a bunch of hacky repairs. Originally I'd hoped to make a clean illustration out of this, but recently found that its more effective for me to just rough it all in, communicate what's in my head, and move on. I do know the chozo suit pretty well, being a 2D Metroid nut, but didn't bother to make it exactly the same. Really, I just wanted to get an idea of the feisty blonde bombshell hiding in that suit, and get her blood boiling a bit, since I feel that she's lacking some personality lately. In the good old days of Super Metroid or NES, if she got out of the suit it was time for black bikinis, or sexy death. Now she just skips around with her whip and blue body suit. I want my "Ripley" inspired Samus back...Ripley taught us that when a job goes bad, strip down and open the airlock. And, scream at the monster... it helps.Related content

Nice! Hippy Samus!
Her face reminds me of Lal'c (Gunbuster 2) for some reason.

It's still pretty good. I don't think you have to put in every single detail of the Chozo Suit or else it'd be cluttered. The minor details that you put into it work well. I like it.

I take it that you pretty much loved the series. I enjoyed Super Metroid. Heck! I had to go looking around to find Zero Mission and Fusion last year.

I went on a Metroid binge around October...Started Metroid Prime 3 and was like, "hey, this isn't Metroid, its Halo!". Then did Super, Fusion, Zero, Fusion again, Zero again, then Super again (with my brother Mark over at IGN). Time for Metroid 2. I'm really into studying quest flow in games.

Return of Samus was my first Metroid game; I've got a bit of a soft spot for it.

You just reminded me that I had been thinking about my own idea. Like how I would want this type of game to play. I have great ideas for the gameplay. But sadly I'm being told that if I concentrate solely on the gameplay and not the story, then it will not ever been any good.

I take it that you're not a big fan of the first-person shooter either, huh? I mean the controls for Metroid Prime 3 were great, but after a while I get tired of first-person games. I guess I'm not the only one who would love to see Metroid go back to its roots.
Metroid 2... You mean the Gameboy title "The Return of Samus?" I haven't played that one in ages. Funny how I could beat that but not the original, which was just a perplexed maze. The map system of Super Metroid spoiled me.
I guess understanding quest flow helps in making a game that would give the player a sense that what he's playing isn't linear, but he won't get lost or confused. Like finding something that he can't do, then coming back later to take care of it.

An excellent piece of work. But most importantly, thanks for letting us know what was going through your head as you drew it. I think it really helps us to understand the art when we get to hear the artist himself explain it.
And hey, Samus art is always cool

In other words, under the suit of this draw, Samus just wears a bikini in place her Zero Suit

Wow, I like your version of her Power Suit. I wonder if Nintendo would like it too?
I wouldn't know much about Samus myself. The first time I ever heard of her was in Super Smash Bros. on the N64, to which I thought she was just a male robot (I mean, there wasn't much of anything to go by as far as gender went.) Now, though, when I found out she was really a girl in a battle suit, I was rather interested in knowing more about her. What games would you recommend for someone who would want to learn more about her, history-wise?

Waste no time. Get a Wii, and download Super Metroid from Virtual Console. Do it now. Stop reading. Go man go! If you don't have a Wii, pick up Metroid Zero Mission GBA. You can get a used non-lit GBA for $20, just sit in the sunshine.

I always figured that Samus was Ripley, since Metroid was an unlicensed Alien game. It came out in the heyday of those movies, and had a (gasp) female lead who got in her underwear at the end. Also, the planets of the aliens origins are almost the same (SR388 and LV426). Aliens being a parasitic life form...setting the bomb, escaping...all that. She's even got a "male" sounding name. Later we got the Metroids that change based on their environment...it all runs parallel. Also...Ridley? Like, the director of Aliens!

Ficfactor In reply to MattBozon [2008-04-18 07:19:48 +0000 UTC]
Taking the parallels even further, Samus eventually becomes part-metroid thanks to Federation technology used to save her life. Recall that in the insipid (Joss Whedon, what were you thinking!?) fourth installment of Aliens, Ripley is resurrected as an alien-human hybrid.
And both also have newborns of their enemy races imprint upon them as mothers.
I'd think that it's fair to say that the movies' inspiration on the Metroid series continues to this day.
