Yeah, but here's the thing, Dougherty and crew wanted to stick to the basics. They were allowed to take LIBERTIES with the likes of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah but they wanted to stick true to the traditional sense. Besides, LegendGhido (to me) is less suped up Heisei Ghidorah, and more of a cross between Grand King Ghidorah, Heisei Ghidorah, and GMK Ghidorah with a smidgen of Keizer Ghidorah thrown in due to the asymmetrical head designs.

Yeah, it's called Cherry picking. They took aspects of Ghidorah they liked, put it all into a blender, and poured it out. They played it safe, because, well, the last time somebody went out of the comfort zone, We got Mecha Picasso painting, Grootzilla, and Worm Toy Ghidorah. You want another reason why they're playing it safe? Two words:

GODZILLA. 1998.
