so was the original render simply monotone and you applied colour in Photoshop?
would it be possible to see the original render to get an idea of what you did to it? and was the blurring post-work as well?

The more I look at this the more I like it.
It gives me that flash animation feel the way the
colors are vibrant and follow a light source gradiation
scheme; it also helps that its not flat. Nice work on this
