Description
After several requests, here is my tutorial for Non-Stretch Fabric Boot Covers! This works for any kind of fabric and uses an invisible zipper closure at the back of the boot cover.I've made quite a few boot covers, all of them different, but most employing this method. Please let me know if you have any questions!

I wanted to make a different color bottom sole thing for the boot covers i am making, what kind of fabric would you suggest? I scrolled in the comments and saw heavy duty non skid fabric but i don't know what type that would be exactly

You can use anything, really. I recommend heavy twill or fabric used for the soles of pajama feet.

I have a question about the bottom of the boot. I walk around the con a lot and I made a pair of shoe covers once but after just one day they were totally destroyed. How do you prevent this?Β

I use adhesive-backed sole patches (you can find them in the shoe lace/inner sole area of the shoe section at stores) or make a separate sole out of heavy duty non-skid fabric. You should also limit the amount of time you spend walking on pavement/streets/sidewalks and stick to just the con center if possible.

Since this is a non-stretch tutorial, I recommend non-stretch fabrics. Any type of fabric can work, to be honest.

I was wondering. I have boots that sort of have a saggy fabric at the leg. How can I make the boots appear tall and smooth without letting the fabric from the original boot show as a bunch?
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to Lady-Koisuki [2016-02-09 08:57:00 +0000 UTC]
You can't ideally unless you can straighten the original boot leg. If you can, use a thick, sturdy fabric and make the boot cover pretty tight fitting. If you can't, try a different shoe.

This is a wonderful tutorial for boot covers! I like that it's for all fabrics, not like most tuts that use only stretchy fabric. I'm trying to make the boots for Katarina from League of Legends (link for picture: cdn.artstation.com/p/assets/im⦠) and I bought this non-stretchy thin faux wild leather fabric. Now I just need to find some used/old boots that have a similar sole to the ones she has on the model pictures.. so far no luck ..

If I want to keep the soles of the original shoes visible, is there a way of making the covers without gluing it down and ruining the shoes?
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to AoiTorikago [2015-04-29 06:29:57 +0000 UTC]
These don't glue down. You can make a sole using clear vinyl, or make spats. Spats are essentially shoe toppers with open bottoms and an elastic band that goes under the shoe just before the heel.

Thaaaank goodness. There's a pair of boots I want to make, but they don't look skin tight so I didn't really want to use the stretch tutorials I've been finding everywhere. This should work perfectly!

So I tried this yesterday for my Sailor Pluto costume....and unfortunately the foot part was WAYYY too small. I am a little bit bummed but I guess I should have made a mock up first...it's just that muslin doesn't really behave in the way the fake leather material I am using does.... I guess for my 2nd go at it I need to increase wayyy more in the foot area? I guess if it's too big I can always take it in some.... but can't really add material now that I already cut it that way. ;___; at least this material is WAY easier to cut than standard woven or knit fabrics...

FireLilyCosplay In reply to NozomiWhiteWolf [2015-04-20 15:20:49 +0000 UTC]
For thicker materials like pleather and vinyl, make sure you leave the sole open or use a different fabric for the sole, as the pleather won't wrap around the shoe bottom easily.
Definitely add more material, but don't make it super tight fitting. Pleather needs room to move and bend.

I have a pair of knee-length leather boots that I wanted to cover, but the problem is that the boots already have a zipper sewn from the top of the boot towards the bottom. I was wondering if I should try to work around the zipper by making a cover that starts at one side of the zipper, wraps around the boot and ends at the other side of the zipper..Or should I try something else?
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to Renaul [2015-03-24 06:11:08 +0000 UTC]
Just cover the zipper. It won't show through the boot cover and it's less work.
For reference, all the boot covers shown in the tutorial are over boots with zippers on the inner leg from top to bottom.

Renaul In reply to FireLilyCosplay [2015-03-24 16:56:50 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for the reply! If I covered the zipper would I still be able to get to it if I needed to? The reason I ask is that since the boots I am planning on using are very durable costume boot. The boots need to be zipped up to keep their shape.
Also zipping and unzipping the zipper is the only way I can get those boots on, since they do not allow you to slip your foot through the boot.
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to Renaul [2015-03-25 06:05:26 +0000 UTC]
Yes. You put the cover onto your leg first unzipped, then put your boot on, then slide the cover down and zip it. It helps to make the zipper closed at the top and zip down to the heel.

Would it be a good idea to use pleather for these as well?
(I'm was only just the other day that I realized the character I'm attempting to cosplay has thigh high boots. a @;; )

Yes, you can use this method with any fabric.

I'm think I'm having trouble with the 'sandwiching' part. So I put on the shoe and when you sandwich it, is it okay for my leg and shoe to be resting on the floor as you are sandwiching it or should both fabric pieces be equal? It's hard to explain... but what I'm saying is, if you rest your leg on the floor and pin aroudn it that way, one piece of the fabric will be larger than the other... another attempt to reword this question... do you have to make it so that when you sew it, the seams should be in line with eachother front and bacK?
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to bean93 [2015-01-12 16:07:39 +0000 UTC]
You can make it however you want. I have rested my leg on the ground before. I find it easiest to pin the shoe and ankle first, then stand up and pin the leg.
And you can put your seams wherever you want, but front and back is the easiest without using darts to accommodate the curves.

Β This'll be my first time doing boot covers! I'll definitely do it on scrap first, but otherwise I have some nice satin taffeta that I'll be using for Sakura Miku. I hope this turns out okay!
Do you think instead of extending it all the way on the bottom of the shoe, that I could just tack it down with something around the edge? Like, E6000 or Hot glue?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to LuckyNyu [2014-10-27 06:47:15 +0000 UTC]
E6000 or epoxy glue or shoe glue.Β Hot glue won't hold it to the sole, but it will hold it to the shoe fabric.

LuckyNyu In reply to FireLilyCosplay [2014-10-27 06:57:43 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's what I'm planning to do. I want to be able to use the shoe's sole (hopefully).
I've got E6000 on hand so I'll probably use that :3 I'm just a tad bit worried of messing something up with something that permanent x3
I've got a bad habit of touching things before they're dry...

Elebrylla [2014-10-15 00:42:26 +0000 UTC]
How does the fabric on the bottom of the shoe hold up during use? I imagine it would get worn out if you're walking outside (sidewalks, streets, etc.).
π: 0 β©: 1
FireLilyCosplay In reply to Elebrylla [2014-10-16 01:58:38 +0000 UTC]
It holds up well enough for inside walking. If travelling outside on pavement, I recommend reinforcing the sole with non-skid fabric, rubber soles, or some such.
