So I decided to finally make him as part of my Demi-Gods series that I had done in the past so this information I'm about to give is loosely based on his description in actual mythology (Though there isn't actually much on him anyway), the thing he's actually known for is being the demon in Phantasia XD.
Chernobog's name translates to Dark God. He is one of the first born not of the 4 gods of Urth, but of the Demi-God Death. Chernobog was born from darkness as one of the first Shinigami, one of the first reapers of souls among mankind whom would ferry the souls to the afterlife, or reap the souls of the wicked and cast them into damnation. Chernobog seeks the darkness, and resides within it.
Chernobog was created to be the opposite to his sister Belebog, who herself was crafted to be a goddess of light. (Belebog is actually normally a male instead of a female, but considering his actual existence is currently in doubt due to studies of ancient gods and there being no reference to him I decided to take liberties). Death created them from light and darkness, in an attempt to prove that there could be peace between the two opposites, that the searing pain and evils of the burning light could be used for good, and the cool and calming darkness could be used as a force of supernatural fear to battle against the Demi-god Typhon.
Because of his affinity for the darkness though, he quickly became close to the Demi-Goddess Arachne, as he possesses a great closeness with spiders as he too exists as they do. He hides patiently in the shadows, ready to reap the souls of those who are caught in her spirit web, and together they used the spiders as scouts and spies to learn the whereabouts of those who desecrate the dead, or whom invoke the names of other dark or eldritch deities so he may descend upon them with the silent swiftness of a spider. He worked alongside her, to create a web of espionage in which they could view the world and act immediately against it's threats.
The three of them worked in tandem for a while, with Arachne and eventually Samhain Jack once he ascended as the first human to become a reaper, though Chernobog's violent tendencies and Belebog's predisposition towards healing made things difficult and they often clashed. Everything between them was opposite. While Chernobog was born of darkness, she was crafted from light. While he was a master of death, she coveted life, and while he would capture prey with spider's thread, Belebog would enwreath herself and her allies in the silk of protection from her caterpillars and silk worms. As such they were unable to remain allies, despite Belebog's pleas for her brother to spare certain creatures, he would not listen and would mistreat her at every given opportunity leading to a schism between the two gods. Arachne was torn as she was quite fond of the both of them, however in the end she sided with Chernobog.
During the god wars, they began on the same side of the battle, fighting against other gods like the horsemen of the apocalypse and Lucifer, though when Belebog and Chernobog split, he became a detriment to all sides of the conflict, only fighting for himself. He battled against Adephagia and won for dominion over spiders, being one of the vermin under her control, and then wrested the remaining power from the Goddess Arachne as he devolved further into his madness, breaking her trust and consuming her like the spider she was, to be the supreme deity over spiders, allowing him to forge a cosmic web and spy on the world, attacking when necessary.
As Chernobog aged, he became more reclusive, like the spiders he loved he would sit in secluded locations, destroying any who came his way, and as his memories faded, he lost his purpose and would feed on the souls to regain his lost memories and heal his aging mind, and as such became one of the first Shinigami to turn against his own kind and consume them for power.
Belebog fought against him and tried to stop him, however she too was never heard from again, and it's thought that she may have been consumed or sealed away by Chernobog, or she may have been consumed by the reaping spider.
It is also believed that the Chaos Deity Atlach Nacha may have something to do with his fall from grace but it is unknown.
Chernobog fights with his cloak, which contains within it a web that connects all throughout the universe, and with it he can throw the cloak over himself and travel along the web to immediately travel to a new location, but only if that location is steeped in darkness. Anything in the dark becomes something in his own domain and because of this he can reap the souls of those who hide under the veil of darkness. He can also inflict a great poison upon creatures both living, dead, god or mortal, and drain the soul energy from a creature through his claws, bite, or scythe and steal their power with the powers he stole from Arachne. With his own power he can make the dark and shadows rebel against you, breaking your shadow from your body and making it slay you, causing the shadows around you to become predatory and violently tangible, or even being able to command power over the darkness when you close your eyes.
Because of this he and Nitros are closely connected, and Nitros is not too fond of the demi-god that he shares his power with.
Sometime when I have free time I'll also draw up Arachne, Belebog, Samhain Jack, Atlach Nacha, and Typhon for you guys. Looks like the Demi-Gods series is kind of back in a way XD.

There isn't actually much info on Chernobog when it comes to legends. They just kind of say he's a god of darkness and evil and say he does bad stuff without ever explaining how or why he does any of it. So most people depict him with whatever weapon they think would look cool on him, so it's highly likely he's used a hammer.

That's cool, flexible mythologies are the most fun to write and draw.

No, these are all on a predetermined list if you follow the link I shared up there. Those are all separate things that I will probably only post on Patreon. If ya wanna suggest something spooky or creepy on there though go right ahead.

Nope, just a devil really, which is why he tends to get bat wings. It's mostly because of the depiction given in Fantasia though that people are used to and thus where a lot of that comes from.

Oh cool! Hey if you are drawing like spooky mythological creatures how's about the Morrigan or cernunos?

Oooh, I had seen Cernunos many times but never knew his name till I just looked him up. But both of those are cool. Back when I did my Demi-Gods series I only had one Celtic Goddess in there with Epona, so those two would be great additions
