Description
*whew* My entry for 's Who's That Girl Contest , in which we had to pick traditional male characters and convert them into female characters. I didn't think I was going to be able to do this one, but I had some freelance work fall through on me... unfortunate, but at least it means I had a chance to do the contest! It even has a background (of sorts...)Without further ado, I present to you the eccentric but brilliant Charlene Holmes and her stalwart partner Dr. Jane Watson. ^_^ (Yes, I've seen the new movie, and yes, it was awesome.)

Hee hee again good luck! I love the colour scheme, did you intend it all to be muted blues and yellows? Because I think it really adds to that "Sherlock Holmsey" feel

Thanks! Yeah, I'm really happy with the colors on this one - the intent was "grimy yellow gaslights and foggy blue shadows on the dark and gritty streets of old London..." Heh, I do love me some melodrama. ^_~

Hahah well it worked I think, and grimy old streets of London are classy

You're welcome. ^_^ And I really enjoyed the new movie - although I was a bit sad that Holmes wasn't wearing his classic overcoat!

I've always enjoyed Robert Downey Jr. movies. Planning to see Holmes this week if it's still in theatres...

It should be. I really like him, and his career is going through a nice resurgence ever since Iron Man (which he was fantastic in ^_^)...hopefully it'll keep going up!

A resurgence indeed....especially after his long battle with substance abuse. A lesser man would be dead in a ditch.
Btw, your entry has placed in the top three!!

Yeah, I'm actually pretty impressed with him. His, ah, downhill descent was pretty steep; I thought for sure he WAS going to end up dead...but he seems to be pretty well recovered now. Hooray!
Woohoo! *Cheers* I'm so excited; this is my first DA Contest! ^_^ In total seriousness, I don't really care who wins. (Well, not that I don't care in a mean way, but you get it.) I'm just so happy that I did well enough to place, and I really feel like I did my best on the piece - I'm perfectly content with however the final judging goes. Thanks again for hosting the contest.

I like Holmes's face and hairstyle a lot. Considering the time period, wouldn't it be more appropriate for them to be wearing dresses?

Thanks - was going for pale and somewhat eccentric. ^_~
Yeah, it would - but one of the criteria for the contest was that the characters should be recognizable as their male counterparts, and I finally decided it wouldn't look Sherlock Holmes-y enough without the coat and hat and that would have looked weird with a dress. You're completely right though, dresses would be more accurate - I actually debated it with myself for a while in the early stages...
I guess we'll see how the contest judges feel about it.

There isn't much change in the clothing (I saw the rules said you should change the costume accordingly) but I don't think you could really do something about it without losing the iconic look. But a female Sherlock Holmes (If he was written as a woman in the first place)would wear female clothing and be much different than her male counterpart than if the character was invented in more modern times because of the gender roles back in the day. I mean the whole concept would get different if Doyle had written the character as female. She would behave differently than if she were a man as a start, especially when being written by a man

Yeah, i had to debate between being authentic and...well, keeping the character "in costume", I guess you'd say. But yeah, Holmes would have been utterly different as a female... In fact, given the time period of the character AND the author, I'm not even sure it would have worked. Even aside from the fact that I'm not sure Doyle's audience would have read a book about a female investigator, even in fiction would anyone have gone to a female detective in that time period? She certainly wouldn't have managed to get into many of the locales from the Holmes stories, I think... Would there have even been a story? Speculation, I suppose, but it's interesting to think about...
