“Don’t you think it’s time to get rid of that old thing?”

I wanted to convey the feeling of treasuring and cradling a mundane thing that seems worthless to most others.
The object didn't necessarily have to be a lighter, but I wanted it to be something small and ostensibly disposable. Plus, I just think lighters are cool, so it fit the bill.

When my father passed away, his wife was surprised by his ornament collection when going through his things. He had raved about how much he loved the ornaments, so she was disappointed to find that his Christmas ornament box was full of cheap, easy-to-find ornaments from Walmart and garage sales. Of course, he loved those ornaments because they perfectly fit his ideal Christmastime decor, brought him nostalgia, and because I had hand-picked all of them to fit his tastes over many years.
That feeling of cherishing something banal and valueless thing (often to the skepticism of others) is largely what inspired this piece.
