A Legend of the Before People, of Atelani, the First Female Chief

Kohu nodded to himself. He had been correct in his estimation of Atelani’s heart. The two of them had spent some time discussing the plan of the new cooking place and as soon as they had come to an agreement, Atelani excused herself in order to prepare a meal over their simple campfire. For Atelani had resolved to let no one go another night without something warm to eat.

Kohu watched as the doe took up her borrowed pot and made her way toward the brook. Its water was clear and good, and would serve well as the beginning of some kind of soup or stew. As Kohu thought about this, his stomach growled. To be sure, he was content with the gods’ provision of fruit and other ready food, yet he would very much welcome a meal made by ouataki hands. It had been too long since he had tasted anything like home cooking.

If they were going to have soup tonight, they would need spoons. Kohu removed a small iron blade from his pouch. Ordinarily, he would use this tool to harvest sacred herbs. Even so, there was no reason why it could not also be used to carve rudimentary utensils from whatever sticks or branches presented themselves.

Kohu paused for a moment. Such practical skills did not come naturally to him. Indeed, he had never been strong, nor dexterous. Most of his days had been spent in the spirit world. He had learned much of magic and medicine, but ordinary living could be a challenge. Oye, what did he know of making spoons??

The old shaman again thought of Atelani. One did not need strength or special ability to meet every challenge. A firm resolve was often enough.
