Description
Edited again -10/2/2011Rurouni Kenshin - Kyoto Arc: after the fight with Shishio, Kenshin at death's door and Hiko looking on...
Kenshin had been lying there for more than three years before this scene fleshed out after a discussion with
Hiko was harder to peg, I can't remember how many times I had to redo him - I had to write a short vignette to get into his head [link] , please do read and comment, I'm inordinately proud of it, and I'm sure it needs a critique.
Background was rather unfinished previously.. played around with putting common items but I think I like this best. Hiko looks so ominous against the dark background.. and I edited the shading on his face so he looks more care worn and closer to his age
Thanks to everyone who had put in all the thoughtful comments- really helped me a lot, and I certainly enjoyed the discussions.
And of course, due credit to Watsuki-san..

Perhaps the best realistic Kenshin I've ever seen; certainly the best Hiko.

I saw this drawing of yours before re watching the part of the anime (or actually, watching for the first time, since it's been way to many years and I don't think I ever got that far in the anime - I'm reading the manga now but I haven't got to this part there yet) and when the scenes skip with Kaoru talking about how Kenshin took time to recover, I admit I immediately filled the time gap with your drawing in my mind. When I saw the drawing the first time I didn't know where it fit in the story, but when I got there, it just matched in my head like it was actually part of what I was seeing, it all fell into place. This is just how good your work is
Though most people focused on Hiko and how you portrayed his intensity in this edge situation, my first focus on the image, even in the thumbnail size, was Kenshin. I just love how you drew his fragility, he looks so much younger, so innocent even, yet tainted in different shades of red . That was reallyΒ an impressive fight he had with Shishio, I was on the edge of my seat in each episode, he was pushed to the extreme. You even drew the bite mark, Aoshi's neck cuts, you were really careful to keep everything. Like I said, this caught my attention before knowing exactly what it was, but now that I know what this drawing portrays, it becomes even better.

You don't know how much I love this!! I can feel Hiko's strength, his powerful look and presence makes me shiver. Somehow protecting him from us, supporting him, caring for a now harmless "little boy" who is in the edge of death. Kenshin bleeding...
Wow, it moves me so much!!
Thank you for that.

It takes a certain skill to createΒ art with such powerfull emotion like this! The colors used, the subjects of the piece, the overall presentation...you have this skill! The emotions I feel while viewing this piece are varied and intense! Everything about this is...just...I'm not sure what to say anymore, I'm at a loss for words, truely! Incredible piece!

I did this such a long time ago, and to be honest I can never 'see' how much of the emotions was conveyed through this piece.. or any piece for that matter.. because I can never be the casual viewer.. I'd wrung every drop of emotions doing this and I can only remember those... having said that, it is very gratifying to see what I had sought to deliver was perceived...Β
Thank you for writing this long comment. I truly appreciate it.Β

This is really beautifully done. Hiko looks awesome, but Kenshin himself is even more amazing. He seems so at peace despite how badly injured he is after the battle with Shishio. I always Thought it as odd how much the anime glossed over how serious Kenshin's condition was when they returned to the Aoi-Ya after that Epic fight. This is gorgeous, and shows that though he's serene, perhaps in unconsciousness still knowing that he's once again saved the people he cares about, that for him, the battle for life isn't really over. I love it.

Yes.. the critical moment when he first came back and the 'missing month'... so glaringly absent.. but the I suppose the story would have lost its focus if they'd elaborated on it.. but it could have be done in so many ways..Β
ah well...Β
which make this piece very original haha...Β
yeah.. Kenshin's peaceful serenity.. I suppose that's one way of looking at it..Β
but what I had in mind was he was literally dead to the world...Β

This piece is really emotional... I found it on Pintrest , character names only, and HAD to hunt down the source in hopes to learn more about it. As soon as the Kyoto Arc was mentioned, everything fell into context. Joined Devient art just to comment I truly love this piece. Hiko's intensity is disturbing, like he wants to climb out of the picture and beat on someone... Kenshin, Shishio, somebody, anybody, YOU! But the thing that struck me strongest was Kenshin's serenity, and how sad it is that the only time he can appear so peaceful is when he is wholly unaware at all. It rather captured the underlying tragedy of Kenshin's character.
I really don't think this picture could be improved upon. It is complete just as it is!

You are most welcome, and something must be said for the skill of one who can convey so well with art, what is in their heart . I am so very glad I found the original source as the one on Pintrest was not a direct link - in fact I had to do an image search for "Kenshin Himura & Seijuro Hiko" to find a credited link here (I'm not the only one who loves this image
. It was a fun 'treasure' hunt and I am delighted to have found a whole chest of gems to explore. *GRIN* I intend on looking through all your works, Ken-san and otherwise.

I was curious enough to do a similar search.. really interesting and surreal experience to see my own works among the search results..
I still haven't gotten over the novelty of seeing my painting of Takeru Sato as Kenshin, as the first few finds on google image search...
.. wonder what people make of me sometimes... as my paintings are posted on my fb page as well...
