Accounts on the young lad are scarce. The following is an excerpt from the diary of a Cpl. John Lawrence of the 2nd Marine Regiment:

"We fought our way across sandy dunes and foliage until we were hold up in a foxhole as every Japanese soldier in the area began to fire on our position. We were stuck and faced with the real possibility of dying! Suddenly, out of nowhere, the enemy began to get cut down. I look out the hole and to my left, I saw what looked to be a young boy firing his BAR Auto-Rifle on the enemy, cutting scores down, tossing nades down the positions.'

'We were cleared. As I got close to the boy, he looked at me and I froze. Now, I have seen men have this thing called the thousand yard stare. But this boy, he had that stare but something more. I can't describe it. I merely gave him my thanks and asked for his name, rank, and unit. Only thing he told me was that he was T. Lewis from Ohio, age 14, and that he was a Pfc. with the 8th Marines. Then he went on his way. Never saw the boy again.'
