This is the account of Cpt. Henry J. Collins of the 82nd Airborne Division, dated September 19th, 1944, during Operation Market Garden:

"My unit was tasked with taking a town from the Germans. We approached the town in silence until suddenly, we were under fire and took some casualties. I quickly could tell that we facing SS troops, which I later found to be members of theΒ 11th SS Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division Nordland. They were fierce and we couldn't move forward, as there was an MG42 on the second floor, followed by several troops firing assault weapons."

"Suddenly, the second floor blew up. I whip my head to the right to see a young boy dropping an M1 Bazooka and quickly firing down on the Germans with his BAR with Drum Mag. The Germans quickly fire on the boy, but he dodged and as if I was watching a movie, the boy climbed on to the roof and sprint firing his BAR, giving me and my men the chance to move forward and take the town. Killed 73 and took over 100 prisoners."

"Later on, I found the young boy and he stated that he was 14 years old, name was Jack R. Lewis, was from Lansing, Michigan, and that he was a unit from the 101st Airborne Division, but that he got separated from them during a chaotic drop. I told him that he could stay with us till we find his unit. He accepted. We're ordered to move onward to take another town soon."
