As for shading tips I have two suggestions, both rather simple. 1. Use jagged black lines around the eyes and in bent joints. 2. Where you would want a shadow, (like one whole side of the body depending on what direction your imaginaary light source is coming from)
draw the shadow in a color only slightly darker then the colored area, close it off and fill it with that darker tone. Some of my more simple 'cartoon based' stuff is a good example... like the 'turtles vs the foot' thing i uploaded lastnight, the foot in the bottom right will let ya know exactly what i mean. I use photoshop to color my stuff, which is MS paint with more buttons basically so you can def do that ish.
