I can't remember the sons' names. This was during the time of the Trojan war between the Trojans and the Greeks, caused by Paris's kidnapping of Helen. Helen, the face that could launch a thousand ships, was said to be the most beautiful woman alive. Anyway, that's just to set the scene.
The grown man in the statue, Laocoon, warned the Trojan's against accepting gifts from the Greeks (The Trojan Horse). He was an Oracle of some sort. The two boys in the statue are his sons. Laocoon's arm that is lifted, the right that is broken? It is said that many sculptors tried to recreate what it looked like, and Michelangelo himself thought it was as it is seen. Then they found the lost original, and he was right. I always thought that was pretty cool. People said he was wrong, but he was right.
The Trojan horse was an offering to the Goddess Athena (wisdom). In anger, she sent two serpents to punish Laocoon, and as such, sent them for his two sons, in their abode near the sea. (Laocoon served Neptune, God of the Sea and Earthquakes.) Laocoon ran to them to try and save them, but was caught up by the serpents as well, dying a very painful death with his sons. The Trojans thought this to be a sign Laocoon displeased Neptune. ((Before, he had thrown a spear into the Trojan Horse to try and prove that it was dangerous.)) The Trojan's also thought it was a sign that the Trojan Horse was sacred, so they wheeled it into the city. As a result, the Greeks burned Troy to the ground, gaining victory.
It's a sad story, really. And only a very small part in the whole, but it is interesting none-the-less, I think. Sorry if this bored you, but I've always loved Greek and Roman mythology.

I don't trust it. If there is anything I've learned from the Doctor, it is this:
Don't trust any statue. Don't keep your eyes of it. But don't look directly in its eyes. And whatever you do... DON'T BLINK.
Oh, also, very cool photo.
