probably one of your best ever in my opinion, great work matching the colors. great use of texture on the scales background is just mind blowing... quick question did you use any reference?.

Thank you very much.
No, no reference. That's why the colours are so wild. Originally he had said green and red... O_o

He requested a sort of chinese-dragon sort of thing, but that completely failed. It still has similarities, however, like the body structure. Otherwise I have no idea, the design came about by chance mostly ˆ–ˆ
I sketched it first in pencil (I sometimes start with the scale - layout the picture in shape things, vaguely, just to get the basicness of it) and then drew the lines. The initial drawing took a rather long time o_O a few hours anyway. Nothing compared to the time it took to colour it though, unfortunately.
I usually hold back on pencil shading when I know I'm going to digitally colour it, but I love what it looks like when it's shaded in pencil AND in colour.
After I finished the drawing, I scanned it at full size. It ended up 2000x3000 (approximately) pixels, so it took ages to colour.
But this way is far more rewarding. I used to reduce the size and then colour, but you get a lot more detail and quality if you colour it at full size, despite the insane lengthyness.
Let's see... when I get it into photoshop I usually go to brightness/contrast and increase both a little so that the background is lighter and the lines are darker. In this case I also went to hue/saturation and made the lines reddish.
Then I create a new layer and set the mode to 'multiply' so that I can colour without affecting the lineart.
(so much for a brief note, right? harhar)
The colouring took so long that I took a few really long breaks. Several weeks, maybe a month. This happens when I lose interest in the picture or have no sort of motivation. When I heard he was coming to dinner that was my motivation to finish it.
The first layer of colour was just solid colours to get everything in place. Then I started the shading, and it looks nice if you can use different shades of different colours for shadows and for highlights, rather than just shades of the same colour.
I experimented with an interesting brush setting on this particular picture. I think you can click on the stylus button or something in adobe photoshop and there are a few choices of turning things like fade or pressure on or off. There was also a selection to turn colour pressure (or something similar) on or off, and when turned on, depending on the pen pressure (if you have a tablet, that is) the colour changes between your two colours.
If you select your first colour as blue, for example, and your secondary one as red (I hope you know what I mean by these - default is black and white) then if you press hard with the pen, you get blue, and the lighter you press the redder it becomes.
Very fascinating.
I used that for the scales.
The sky was annoying. I redid it several times. >_>
I did some of the same colour-pressure setting on the sky too, I think.
Anyway, hopefully this gives you some ideas.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
