You have no idea how long those feathers took.

Anyway, here's my take on what might have happened had Nightmare Moon won the first go-round she and Celestia had more than a thousand years back.

Yes, there would have been eternal night.

Yes, things would have died due to the lack of sun.

BUT REMEMBER: THIS IS EQUESTRIA!

Magic exists here. Just because things died, doesn't mean they STAYED dead.

You see, that's what I think Nightmare Moon would have done once everything died due to the lack of sunlight; she would have cast one of the (if not, THE) most powerful spell she knew and brought everything that was dead back as a ghost.

Why?

1: obviously, no one wants to be all alone on a dead world (if she did, she would have just stayed on the moon), and just because she was insane doesn't automatically mean she was stupid (everyone seems to think madness and dumbness are the same; they're not).

2: I've read a few old folktales that say that some ghosts draw their spiritual energy (which then forms their ectoplasm) from the light of the moon. That said, the moon would replace the sun as the main source of nourishment for the world and thus everyone would pay attention to the night time and the night sky.

At this point in time (in the drawing) it's Hearthswarming Eve Night, and even the empress of the night needs to get away for a while to relax (ruling a world of undead is harder than it sounds). Where does she go? The ruins of her old palace home in the Everfree Forest to spend time with the one ghost she cares for more than any other.

That little filly is none other than the ghost of Celestia, her sister, and even after all of this, her closest companion (the two have settled things over the years in this, and no Celestia is not trapped/forced to haunt the castle ruins; they just meet up with each other there).
