It is magic when you can mix a famous archeological site with a equally magic natural phenomenon I think it is not usual to see the Merapi that well from there... B & W is also well chosen

Maybe I was lucky that day indeed, and you're right, not that usual to mix both!
Glad you like it!

Yes, I've been there several times. It's a bit in my DNA: I'm of Dutch-Indonesian heritage

Thank you, though most of my family have Sumateran roots from my father's side it has been Jawa (Malang, Surabaya, Yogya). Have you climbed to the top of Merapi and admired the views from there? Though I know it's not always possible when the volcano is very active.

Awesome!! But you were not born in Indonesia, were you?? No I did not have the chance to climb Merapi, I stayed only for about 10 days on Java! And indeed it was the wet season, not sure it would have been possible (it was not possible to climb Rinjani on Lombok for example...). Were did you travel in Indo? I did not go to Sumatra that time... If you are interested here is my blog relating my 4 months in Indo, with many pictures: miliberty2014.wordpress.com

Wow. The haze works in this photo's favor - it brings enough contrast to keep the viewer's eye inside the image (including your clever use of framing). The texture of the fading horizons in the trees and the smoke blending into the clouds is awesome! I love that the silhouette isn't completely black and I can see some of the detail in the foreground on the lower center part of it. I agree with your choice of going monochrome. It might have been overwhelming in color.
The only change I'd make is to do a square crop. Right now, it looks pretty heavy on the left. If you remove the extra structures over there, it'll make for a more symmetrical and eye-pleasing image.

Tanikel, thank you very very much for this awesome review You saw more than I on this shot!!
Someone already advised me to crop on the left to make a perfect symmetry, this is a great idea that I tried but still love both shots, the atmosphere is different - I might upload the symmetrical one too!

Really good capture wich maybe also tells a little story of the city in the foreground and the danger of the volcano in the background. The style of the image works really well with the very high contrast black & white look an only the silhoutte of the foreground. But I still think more contrast in the background would be better.

Thank you very much for your detailed comment and tip, highly appreciated What would you mean by more contrast, you would prefer the volcano to be darker? And you may be right about the danger of the volcano as Gunung Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes of Indonesia!

Unfortunately I am not an expert in post-processing! I mean, I don't know how to change the contrast only on one specific part of the image - because if I put more contrast everywhere, then the stupas (in silhouette) are too dark and the clouds too bright :/

yeah I think that is a little bit more complicated, but if you want to know how just google for something like selective editing in photoshop

This is one of the best pieces of composition I have seen. Having the volcano centered in the photo makes the picture. Having the buildings in all black really brings out their shapes. I just can't stop looking at them. The contrasting between the black foreground and the lighter background adds a nice artsy feel to it. Overall a very powerful and eye catching photograph.

Great composition, Milie! The different triangles work wonderful. I also love the black and white as it shows enough details without beeing distracting. I would probably try to darken the background a little bit, but not too much as the contrast between fog and those temple roofs looks really good.

Damn this is an awesome unique shot! I like your style! You definitely bring a new and unique feel about the place! The silhouettes captured are amazing. I guess my thing would be to crop it so it looked symmetrical - simply because to me that would accentuate that perfection in those silhouttes and the mountain. However I think it is brilliant as it is. Great use of black and white!
