Ahhh, I see. Btw, all the symbolism....just wow.Β I love it.
But the Vong...the freakin', damnable, blasted Vong...ugh. They killed the EU franchise for me. I swear, if I had to read ONE more description of a coralskipper or a Vong transport ship, I'd have screamed.
Interesting to think of his heart still being on Csilla.Β When Zahn first created Thrawn, his exile was real and he truly was just trying to escape his fate.Β Like any good writer, Zahn evolved the character as fans came to love him.Β It's interesting when you read back how cold and really cruel he could be (which made him terrifying, so a GREAT villain to read about), but when he started popping up in more books, he became more collaborative and fascinating to watch. And then we all started asking why he was serving the Empire when they never really accepted him nor recognized his genius, and their values were so different from his.Β When the 2nd wave books started being written and the new orders were handed down that there would be an over-arching storyline no matter who the author was and they would be written in chronological order, we got the Yuuzan Vong as the antagonists.Β And that was the perfect opportunity for Zahn to explain Thrawn's motives.Β It works, really, but it's so sad because Thrawn could have saved them all, I think, if he had just overthrown the Emperor and gotten the Alliance to the negotiating table.

The Thrawn duology brings up Thrawn motives, which was before the NJO came out. Thrawn believed that the empire was the only way to win, at least he was wrong there.

It has been sooooo long since I read those two... they had been boxed up in storage for the last 9 (!?!?!) years, and only since I moved have I been able to rescue them from that box and lay eyes on them again. I need to re-read those. Somehow I was under the impression it was until Luke and Mara traveled to Chiss space to meet with Jagged Fel that all that came out. Not that I can be sure there, either, because I stopped reading NJO before they got there.
I am not saying I disbelieve you, btw. Not at all. I trust your memory much more than mine at this time, lol.Β
I still think that if Thrawn could have been persuaded to join/lead the Alliance instead of sticking with the Empire, he could have made the galaxy something grand.

It seems implied in the duology, when Parck talks about why they are out there, and why they wish to have Mara's help. As Kres'ten'tarthi tells Mara,"there are a hundred different threats out there that would freeze your blood if you knew about them."Β
Assuming Thrawn is quite as similar in canon as in "le'canon", I would think he'd let the Alliance fight that battle on their own, and wait for an opportunity for the Chiss to attack when both allianceΒ and yuuzhan vong have lost much of their momentum.Β

Though I doubt we had heard the last of our favorite Chiss Grand Admiral...He may someday return and terrorize the galaxy once again. Β

I doubt he'll return to known space. He'll possibly use the resources he's been given (the ISD's) and possibly Ezra to deal with the threats he feared in the Unknown regions, as this is the most likely area in which they ended up.Β
