I'm not very good at environments myself, I haven't done a lot of them but I think I could help you some anyway..
What you should keep in mind of where the main lightsource is, in this case it's the entrance. So the entrance should be the brightest in value. And since it's supposed to light up the cave, it needs to be bright. And the light should hit the stuff that's closest to it, real hard. And since the light is so bright, there should also be shadows. In caves there's usually a lot of bouncing going on because there's wet stones and whatever. But I didn't know what type of cave this was so I thought of some sort of mossy and gooey type place. SOOOoooo, the only big bouncelight in this piece should come from the gooey water. It shouldn't reflect a lot since it's very dirty, though.

The biggest error in this piece was the entrance being so dull and the edges around it being too soft. The entrance should have been the biggest punch in value to make the image powerful and it should have casted a lot of light on things close to it.
