Description
Megalotragus was a relative of the modern-day wildebeests and hartebeests. It had a long face and a heavy, long-legged body. It is sometimes called a 'giant hartebeest' but wasn't actually that much bigger than modern hartebeests; with a shoulder height of about 1.4m, it was comparable to present-day wildebeests. It had very large horns, though, much larger than any of its surviving relatives. Megalotragus priscus survived in Southern Africa until about 7 500 years ago; it was one of several 'African megafauna'-members that went extinct fairly recently, possibly due to human activity. While Africa is still the most megafauna-rich continent in the world, it too has suffered its losses.Related content
