Perhaps they choose a gender for themselves? Or maybe they're assigned a gender!
For real though, how much do we all know about the weird inner workings of Smurf village?
I mean, for all we know the smurfs are all assigned their gender! Maybe Smurfette has a
more important role if she's the only one of them that was assigned a girl at birth! Like what
if gender is assigned like a rank in a system? Was she burdened with a gender of labor?
Or maybe the writers just added her as a token female character to appease people~

There are actually more female smurfs, I know there's at least this little girl character with pigtails and a grandma character.
In the case of Smurfette; she was created by Gargamel for the sole purpose of infiltrating, and I'm sure her gender was predetermined by him for this purpose. It's been an eternity ago that I watched her introduction episode, though I remember my mother telling me that the comics had written her slightly different. I think she was longing to become more beautiful/a real smurf in the comic, while the in the tv-show Papa Smurf treated her like she needed to be "cured" or whatever. I'm not even sure anymore, I should look up the episode again.

Otherwise, well done. My favorites amongst the genderbent Smurfs Are Poet, Clumsy, Vanity and Jokey. Also, Brainy is astonishingly adorable. (He always got on my nerves)
