On my repeated visits to the Pantheon of Artist Gods, Amsterdam, I realized that is what Rembrant chased lifelong. The simple expressive line.
And of course collectables, a collecting addiction that led him from riches to rags.
I like to sketch the great houses in Amsterdam. Katrina has kept me from returning to do sketches on the Tcuzinsky Theatre. I enjoy putting classic buildings to paint and paper.
There was this building, extremely important to the history of music in New Orleans, which I had close ties to, so I went there at dawn one morning. Extremely poor chocolate area of town. High Violent Crime Zone. I am Immune.
Sketched for over an hour, and The Empress Kado stuck her head out wondering who the crazy white man was, and what he was doing.
Vistited her when one sketch was completed. Anita Kado, The Late Emperor of R&B, Earnies wife. Danced my way to the graveyard at his second line funeral. planted him near Marie Laveau.
The day after I sketched it, the building (Pre civil rights Musicians Union Club) was blown down by a gale force storm and poof, gone forever.
A slab sits where it was. next to the Empress reclaiming her nightclub from the incompetence and greed that flooded our city.
