Young Amanda Jones, otherwise known as the Student Sleuth, has finally met her match!

Oh what mischief a young detective can get up to while school is in recess! On the trail of valuable stolen books, Amanda (posing as a researcher in family history) tracked them down in the private collection of Lady Jacqueline de Winter. However, Amanda's unexplained interest in the rare volumes did not go unnoticed - leading her host to do some background checking of her own.

Intent on taking the evidence to the authorities, Amanda excused herself for the afternoon; but had to maintain her deception just a little longer when, at her host’s insistence, she stayed for afternoon tea.

After quaffing a delicious strawberry milkshake - while skilfully dodging Madame de Winter’s pointed questions about the nature of her research - Amanda made her apologies and absented herself from the sitting room. Stopping briefly to gather her notes and one of the stolen volumes, Amanda made for the exit. Her route would take her down a grand staircase and across a spacious hallway.

Amanda felt suddenly light-headed as she descended the stairs. She reached for the support of the bannister, as her legs wobbled and each stair became more effort than the last. As she crossed the wooden tiled floor of the grand hallway, Amanda felt herself in a great void - one that spun slowly around her. With great determination she staggered towards the light of the open doorway. But then a mysterious figure, silhouetted in the brightness, blocked the archway ahead. Amanda stopped in surprise and looked up with blinking, heavy lidded eyes.

Madame de Winter closed the door and turned the key slowly in the lock.

Surprised by a sudden clattering sound, she glanced over her shoulder. The corner of her mouth turned up in a satisfied sneer, as she saw the young snoop lying unconscious on the floor.

Amanda awoke, fully dressed, in her school dormitory bed an unknown time later - with complete amnesia as to the day’s events. Unable to find her notepad, or recall her earlier breakthrough, the case of the stolen books would remain forever unsolved.
