I had some half-dozen different ideas for this, but this is the one that i liked the most.
Technically, since the Phocaean brains are encased in a preserving fluid, they are in fact a "dead" race. As their mechanical bodies can't feel pain in any sense, they are treated as zombies in that they suffer no action interruptions or loss from being damaged in combat (main rule book, page 96, under "Wounds"). On balance, if the unit stops working for any reason, the brain case fluid loses its charge and it dies.
