Description Made this for one of my nieces who works in my office.

Acrylic on leather.

I am of the Humuthqui'em Coast Salish people, from the Pacific Northwest.  While medicine bags and bundles are originally of Great Plains and Woodlands derivation, they were brought in pre-contact times over the Rockies, often by Interior Salish or through the Coast Salish People's loooooooong trade routes that went to the Mississippi River and down to Southern Mexico.  Like dreamcatchers and sweetgrass they have become a sort of post-contact pan-amerindian tradition.

A medicine pouch is usually a personal item and thus the things it contains would be of a personal nature.  There may be small items from significant moments in a person's life, traditional healing herbs or substances like sweetgrass, cedar, sage, willow bark, ochre, jade or turquoise, small items given as gifts, or other meaningful objects to the holder.  I have one I take into the bush that contains a small Altoids survival kit, flint, steel and a small personal object given me by my baby niece, so they can also be pragmatic, or a combination. They are often worn close to the chest/heart and some people wear them inside the shirt.

Larger folded ones are known as medicine bundles and they would contain gathered medicinal plants and substances used by traditional healers or shamen.  These are even more culturally important and specific rituals are necessary to handle and open them.  Some people believe that the objects have an intrinsic power, some - that they are to be used in the process of healing or meditation and some that they act as mnemonic items to help one focus and remind oneself of your chosen path.

O Si'yem.

Okay!  Gotta work on the design, though...  not sure if Coast Salish design would work so maybe a different stylization...

Besides marbles, I can think of 3 things I could put in this beautiful bag.

It has a special significance for our people, associated with health and spiritual memory.

It came with a starter pack of "medicine" items.  A tobacco parcel, a spent cartridge and a tiny rock from between two worlds where time is altered...

I think you mean a different kind of pouch.  No objections to making one, but the energies need to be kept separate from this, please.

Thank you for the details.
When you say "our people" could you be more specific?

Im imagining that it's similar to some of the beliefs here, such as peyote should be used only in a religious context, and the Virgin of Guadalupe is sacred and shouldn't be on a hat or t-shirt.

In the US, there is a prohibition on using the flag as an article of clothing.

What are some of the medicine items that a pouch could contain?

I once met a guy in California who had a similar pouch in which he carried purple sage and he would give people samples of the sage. He introduced me to the wonders of sage, and I began using it to make tea and as incense.

I feel privileged to have this insight.
I wish you would copy this comment and put it in the description of the photo, so that others could understand.
I hope you realize how fortunate you are to know who you are and where you come from. I'm just an American mutt with no heritage. I always say I wasn't born in Mexico, but I wasn't alive until I lived here.
I will never remove your comment because of the richness of the information. Thanks Wolf.

Thanks for the heads up. Now everyone who dicovers the pouch will know the story.
And thank you for the recent faves. I understand why they appealed to you.
