Description I just couldn't resist when I saw that Briar-Estates was selling this girl. Its taken me so long to sort out the payments for her, but now she's actually been shipped to Lakewood. And knowing me, she'll be staying until she needs a zimmer frame

I have changed her name from her old home [she used to be BEE Decoris Erycina], but this one just fell into place as I was finishing this reference. She has also been aged up a bit.

Personality: Winter is a quiet soul. She's very observant with a gentle heart and though she likes people, she is a little timid. Too much noise and activity, things flapping around her can startle, though it's more the suddeness; she does settle down okay and there's no real fear. She's careful with who she puts her trust into and needs a firm but sympathetic approach. She isn't great with kids, or the madness of dogs like Ace, but she is fond of animals a little more calm. Despite being so sensitive, she is keen and forward under saddle or when worked from the ground. She loves to move and perform, responding to aids, especially through body language or voice. Liking to move a lot, regardless of being cautious, she can weave and box walk if she's stabled too much.
History: Winter was bought from Briar Estates, a stable in North England, where she was bred and raised. [in fact, she was 6 months old when sold, so the rest is sort of creative licence]. She was weaned away from her mother without problems and handled from a young age, but sparingly. She was always quiet and gentle hearted, but coupled with being observant and sensitive, she was able to be backed to both saddle and harness by the age of four. Time after that was spent furthering those skills before she was put up for sale. Alec and Chess ended up buying her and taking her to Lakewood in the lorry. Its been found that with her sensitivity, she responds well to bareback and tackless riding, so Chess and Twitch have been working on natural horsemanship with her.

Still doing greyscales with this new method. And loving it, even if there are downsides. I sketched this out like I did with Frosty's - a small thumb-sized gesture sketch, blown up, then worked on from there. I did look for a reference to help with the pose and shading, but I couldn't find any with the feel I wanted, so it's all done without. Winter isn't quite as heavy built as Frosty (she has a sport type in her ancestry), and I felt this slightly more elegant shape fitted with her character more. She was so much fun to paint, and I actually think I got the expression I was going for with her; a little bit uncertain, so I hope that comes through for you guys

And yes...her new name comes from ASoIaF/GoT; the Stark's seat in the North. I adore the word and the name Winterfell and with her snow like appie markings and white mane and tail, I feel she just fits it beautifully.

Time - about 4-5 hours, I think.

Thank you!! Haha, I had to change her name, and somehow Winterfell was in my head and it just worked.

And she's no Arabian, but she has a special space at Lakewood anyway

Oh - this name fits her perfectly.Β  GOT ref or not - it works either way

She is an absolutely beautiful mare - I can see why you fell for her.Β  And the way you painted the background just compliments her so well.Β
The new method of brown (grey) scale coloring you are using is definitely working for you.Β  The highlights and shadows look perfect on her.
Congrats on acquiring another fabulous Faime!Β

Doesn't it?? It leapt into my head and that was it. And it was just a bonus for me being a GoT fan (do you watch it?)

She is stunning. I loved the soft shades of brown and the white spotting so much; she was very much an impulse buy, but I'm so glad I did. Her personality just kind of bloomed, too. That shade of green went so nicely with her colouring, and I just had to throw in some snow effect, what with her name

As for the new greyscale method (what's not actually grey)...it doesn't always suit, but I do really like it at other times. I do think it allows the contours of the horse to show far better through changes in the coat. Using traditional greyscales or overlays, I find, lets some of the detail slip away. Anyway, I'm glad you like it, and I'll stop the over analysing now

Thanks so much

I have watched the first 2 seasons of GoT... I've got to borrow Season 3 from a friend, but haven't pushed very hard for it. Β
Of course, I think Season 4 is probably out on DVD now, so I better get caught up.

As for replies, can we just rename ourselves: Late #1 and Late #2?

Seriously, how does one "get behind" on internet messages? Β

This "new" (or not so new since I'm behind on everything) method of greyscaling really does bring out all of the details in your work... it definitely fits with your style. Β

Such a gorgeous mare, I can see why you'd want her! She is a very interesting colour. You've drawn her beautifully; her mane looks so silky, and her feathers look so fuzzy, and I really like the look on her face.

This one...honestly, I adore her so much. I didn't expect to even when I first saw the design and arranged to buy her. As I was drawing this, I just totally fell in love. Oddly, this method of greyscaling actually helps her pangare stand out, I think. I have a feeling it would have been lost more in a traditional greyscale. Anyway, this comment just made my day because the expression being slightly uncertain was something I was really happy with (even if others interpret it differently), and her feathers were totally meant to be fuzzy and not long and flowy

Basically I adore her, and thank you so much

It's always so lovely when we unexpectedly connect with a horse - be it a pixel or a real one. And I'm quite glad I could interpret her expression correctly, ahah! I really like her.

That greyscaling method you use now looks quite complicated, from what I've seen. Too many layers and too much faffing about, heh. I still want to try it.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to sobreiros [2014-11-28 15:46:04 +0000 UTC]

I agree. There's ones that you know you'll adore even as you invent them, and others that just kind of surprise you Thank you, its great to hear you quite like her already ^^

Ohmigod - its a hassle! Well...okay...The thing is, its not difficult to do and it actually preserves colour far better than some other greyscale methods I've used, including my preferred method. Using a greyscale as an overlay can tweak the colours on the base layer, and white markings I've often had to shade separately because an overlay of the shading just doesn't bring out the shadows. So although there's just one shading layer, sometimes I have to tweak that and there are downsides.

With this...it is a hassle because you have to copy the shading layer several times over, changing their hues, values, balances and whatever else to make the entire horse appear all the colours you need (so a layer for the main body, for dark points/legs, for a grey muzzle, for pangare or roaning, for white markings, for pink skin on those markings etc). And then you have to stack them right so that when you erase the parts you don't need, you end up seeing the colours that you want (so pink ontop of the white, ontop of pangare/dark points, on top of the base and so on). That's the annoying part - all the layers and working to get them the right colour, just by tweaking values. But once that's done...this is why I'm using it more. You don't lose any of the shading or details like you can with overlays. Each tweaked layer retains the colouring, so even white markings still have shadows and highlights. I just think it preserves the colour better, once you're able to get it.

I do encourage you to try it, though. I think it could easily be one of those methods that you either like, and put up with the downsides, or you try once and just don't connect with because of the downsides. I'd love to see what you could do, using this method

My biggest problem is that the program I use doesn't have colour filters... Or an Overlay mode. So tweaking the colours and the like is just impossible. I am seriously considering starting to use it for backgrounds only, and using another for the horses. It's a bit of a hassle, and MyPaint has many brushes that would come in handy while colouring horses... but not being able to tweak the colours nor colour pick is far more of a hassle, heh.

Either way, I'll have to try it. Maybe I'll fall in love.

Ooh such a beauty! β™₯ such cute markings! the birdcatchers fit really beautiful, like little snowflakes (:

and that name x'D it's a bit funny for me as a German, as it's the exact word for winter coat xD

Thank you! I adore her colours and markings, and I definitely felt that she just fitted this new name

And I didn't know that! XD (I named her for Game of Thrones), but that is a nice irony And with the snowflake appie spots it does kind of look like a winter coat

I can't seem to master shading like that, I see a lot of debs do it, but I just can't grasp the techniqueΒ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tattered-Dreams In reply to Delkota [2014-11-23 21:44:11 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean greyscale? If so, there are a lot of different ways to use a greyscale, so if you can't grasp or don't agree with one method, there is always another you can try. This method involves changing the colour balance and hues of a brown-shaded greyscale on many layers and then using the parts you need. But one I've used for a long time without issues is using a grey-shaded one on an overlay layer above my base colours. Some people often use a grey-shaded one that they will then recolour on a single layer. There's lots of methods, so one of them is bound to work

If you mean the kind of detail/soft shading...that's just something that comes with time, practice and a fair bit of study and observation

(and I have to ask..what are 'debs'? I've not heard the term before ^^)
