Yes they are pictures. The effect as you wrote is made during the shot. It doesn't just come from the out of focus but also from the backlight. When out of focus in front a lighter background, the light areas "eat" the darker ones.

you know that i love it because i already told you. it's strange, that this is the first comment after my first comment on this wonderfull photo a month and a year ago. it banns my eyes to look at it... this is the reason i take my time to write at least one decent comment. everytime i open it again. i fall in love with this fragile dancer. she seems to be so focused in her dreams... a bit of lonelyness, a bit of joy ... almost like like a pierrôt on the sand. so surreal and nevertheless it's real. a capture of reality... of a moment that happened. somewhere in Camargue..very strange and fascinating at the same time.
