Description
Mutare, East of ZimbabweNov. 2006
There's a mountain full of forests and on the top of the mountain the house this man takes care of with his family.
We were in the house for the weeks of our stay. When we were not at work down in the town, I was taking pictures of the beautiful landscape, the flowers, the birds in the garden or on the red ground road going down the mountain...
The day before we left, he was looking disappointed and reproached me, that I didn't take him in picture. I said it wasn't a problem, I didn't know he wanted. So he ran to put a necktie and came back in the garden for this portrait.
This is during this trip that I got my first portraits of more or less unknown people. Actually it wasn't difficult.
Oh I love those people!
Oh what has become of you?

~chocolatenoir wrote The history that exists behind this photography is very affectionate. There is not doubt that it is a spontaneous portrait. There is not doubt of the kindness in the expression of the guy. There is not doubt that those people are fantastic. There is not doubt that Africa deserves to be treated by more respect.
Thank you Jordi.

I'm just revisiting an old friend- no, not you! The friend in the photo- you can't be that old I'm remembering now that you said you wished that you had taken more photos in Africa- I will have to see how many you took

I took more butΒ you know a lot of clichΓ©s, that wouldn't bring out the simple message I would like to bring.
But your thing about the old friend, I must say I didn't catch what you mean.

I know, few people have any idea what I am talking about- very often in fact. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought you might have mentioned that you wished that you had taken more photos while there- I don't know where you said that, but I tend to remember such things. As to the old friend, I have visited this photo often, but I meant that YOU are not "old"....Β

Why does this make me tear up? It is not the marvelous photo-it is your words "Oh what has become of you"

This image has a truth about it.Β The ease of the pose, the square format and the distressed colors all speak to the mind's eye.

This is the best kind of portrait - where the subject is willing, and when it's spontaneous. This is a lovely piece.
