was thinking of getting an infrared filter but hdr looks like fun too!

DSLRs have built in filters to remove a certain amount of infrared from the light before it hits the sensor. Some people get those filters removed or replaced and the results are quite amazing, but it's of course a permanent change. Check it out here: [link]
